I was just wondering what a clan is, as I have never really gotten a clear definition, the good, the bad etc.

I'm surprised nobody has replied yet...
I haven't joined a clan because I would find it much like joining a guild in a MMO. It can turn a fun game into 'work'...if you don't show up for practice ... blah blah blah.
But..there are LOTS of different types of clans out there. If you like playing with other people and do not have any RL friends that play, then I would recommend a clan.
Good: good teamwork and meet new people with similar interests, competitions (if you like that sorta thing)
Bad: some clans can be demanding or may have bad reputation and/or ethics.

Definition- a group of people that play the same game and play together,talk together etc Yes there r very diffent clan, some play just for fun and thats just nice if u want som1 to hang with but other clans are more serious, entering leauges and ladders and having weekly practises and matches...Comment

There are clans of every shape and size.
As mentioned, some are very regimented, some are not.
the benefits are;
community - buddies on line on a regular basis.
server to play on - assuming.
lot's of team play compared with lone wolf & pot luck participation.
some want fair share of server expense, some don't - $5/ month ish.
secondary community; e-mail buddies, clan forum.
general team pluses, being a part of a bigger thing, backing up and being back'd up.
competition - if they're competing.
Quicker skill - in general team play improves the learning skill especially w/ good players, a higher bar versus lone wolf.
I can't think of a down side, maybe money, vary rare anti-clan sentiment.
The trick is find like minded people; age, personality, perhaps skill. Websites should give an indication of the teams personality.
I recommend it but to each his/ her own.Comment

Pros for joining a clan:
- Allows you to meet people to play with consistently
- Allows for working on more complex team-oriented tactics & strategy
- Allows you to participate in more competitive gaming (international tournaments)
- *Can* get you alot of money / prizes / hardware if you participate in tournaments & win
- Allows you to meet people that share your interests
- If your clan is known for accomplishments, you will also be known for those accomplishments
Cons for joining a clan:
- Scheduling meetings, scrims, practises, tournaments, etc. can feel like a 2nd job for people after and lose their appeal.
- Clans tend to develop rivalries between other clans & their members
- 'Drama Queens' (every clan has them) can rip apart clans and break the game for some people
- Its easy to lose the 'fun' aspect of the game when you start getting too competitive
- If your clan does something irreputable or *infamous*, you will get labeled for doing that as you are a part of that clan.

While the above pros/cons pretty much sum it up, it does come down to the individual clan. Some are more serious, practices at specific times, drill sargents for leaders, etc... Others, like ours, has become more of a social club. Sure, we're serious, we've warred BF2 3 times on 2 different ladders already, with another match this week, all of this occuring while we war 2 other games on a regular basis.
But we're just as likely to toss 4-5 guys in ISketch and carry on for an hour or so, or just pub it up in a game we enjoy....we even have guys that get in small groups and play games we never would war....
Chemistry is important. When looking for a clan, look at the general age of the leadership, their recruitment process, etc.. I love seeing those clans in CS:S that are drooling over someone after he puts in a round or 2 of pwnage in their server. I've never recruited that way, and never will. TS, forums first, and if we like you and you fit in, then we'll talk about the R :)

i thought of joining this team play clan a while back...and while i am sure they are great at what they do, they were not very inviting or helpful to n00bs...and that was not me being impatient either...took over two weeks for anyone to acknowledge.
real life is too short and there is already too much politics at work to be tied down at night playing a game with a herd of lemmings following the "rules" of a little Napoleon...
my advice - stay away, play with your friends, and enjoy the freedom of being un-guilded (claned)...less stress, no more mess...Comment

I've been in a clan for about two-and-a-half years now. I've seen both the best and the worst, sometimes with me being one or the other. But it's important to see both aspects to you can learn what to do and what not to do in a clan.
The pros, as many have already mentioned, are more about resources and community. You most commonly have a website, some forums, and a server. But there are aspects of a team's activity that you might want to consider before joining one.
1. If a team is really active, they might want you active, too. There are some teams that are so active that they insist you play every day. Some are "I play when I can or when I want to". And others are pretty much flakes--you'd be lucky to see one online in any given day.
2. The level of competitiveness varies. A very small number of clans in comparison to total number of clans out there are training to be pros. Some participate in ladders and tournies, some for money, others for fun. And then there are the casual guys. You get the guys that want to play on public servers to own the crap out of noobies, and then there are the ones that play in scheduled scrims with other clans.
3. The maturity level is a must read. If you consider joining a clan, it's best you do a trial run with them. Check out their resources (do they have a game server? do they have a voice chat server? do they have forums?). Even with all three of these present, you have no guarantees about leadership and membership as far as maturity. Some immature ass could have money to support all these resources, but his leadership could be the equivalent of a spoiled schoolyard bully. Feel them out before you "sign" anything.
4. Teamwork. If a team doesn't have it, you just have a bunch of guys going lone wolf. No real direction. All the glory for themselves. Not to say that such a play style doesn't work, but you have to see if that's for you. If you do want teamwork, you have to stay active, maintain communication both in-game and out, use the voice chat, practice, and learn the team's methods. Sounds like a lot, but a couple weeks of semi-intensive training with a team will help you fall in pretty quickly.
5. Contributions. Some clans insist on membership fees to maintain resources. Other clans do a donation-based system, but this often rests on the guys that work and can contribute. No offense to some teens out there, but a lot of you wouldn't give up money for your team if you had to. That makes for a bunch of guys riding on the coattails of others. And other clans have all the resources backed by one or two individuals that don't ask for anything in return.
I'd say if you're considering a clan, at least play along with them for a week. Most clans are welcoming to guests on their voice servers. Taking such an initiative makes for good marks toward you, and they at least can put a voice to a screen name. Plus, once you start talking and organizing, you start playing better. Always feel out a group before you join. If they pressure you, they're desperate.Comment

I'm new to my clan and at first I wasn't sure about it. Then I got to know some of the people, and we played togrther a lot. It's fun having a group of people to play with
Playing becomes more of a team thing than "lets go kill some people"
Your more likely to find a pilot to fly for you or a gunner to shoot for you, hell if your clan has a pilot, then he'll be happy flying(me) while you can get all the kills as a gunner
I really wasn't sure about the matches and practices, but after a week of practicing not skills but tactics it was fun as hell playing in(and we won) my first match, it was nice excuting a plan and seeing it work. I can tell you playing a 10 min clan match beats the hell out of "pubbing" all day.
Plus with only one win in the ladder, we've won a free 20 man TS server for 2 months and if we get second, $200 and first is $400.

We are not one of those "uber" serious clans that want to take over the BF2world, LOL. Our first mission is to have fun together. When we do have an upcoming match, we practice our tactics a few times, just so that we aren't running around like noobs. hehe.Comment

Cause you know we join clans online to become best friends and meet up all the time, this may be true for small percentage of people, the majority however want to play in a team enviroment, have fun and meet people, how is meeting people on the net any different from meeting people down the pub or Club etc.Originally posted by SomeDude

Cons:
-Can be annoying on TS/Vent with loud and constant voices
-SOME clans can be too structured and demanding etc. You must attend practices (my clan aren't too bothered, turn up if you can, if not nevermind.
Thats about all I can think of at the moment, but i would like to say don't be rushed into joining clans, look around join them on TS and their server (if they have one) see what the people are like general attitudes. I've been in two clans, one for 3 Years and I've just started with a new clan I intend on being here for a long while, your loyalty will be rewarded, search for clans that other games that you are interested too.Comment

for me its about organized competition. Sure, its not for (sometimes) big bucks or prizes....... but.
The big fun is going against an almost certain other team that is organized through the use of strats, voip, and major teamwork. Meanwhile, your team is doing the same.
Some of these matches, can last a very, very long time. Of course if one team has the upper hand, it could also be over very quickly.
I have to say this....Until you have actually played in an organized ladder or league clan match........you really dont know how "fun" this game can be.
Trust me......organized play is very very frustrating.......and unbelievably fun.Comment
