Inspiring Teamwork [Challange]

[Some posts in another thread prompted me to make a new thread on this subject, so some of what follows is re-mixed my from other posts.]

I keep hearing about how bad the teamwork is in general in BF2, but I've found myself in good squads more often than I seem to have the right to by other people's accounts. I started wondering why this is. I don't have a Clan. I'm not the greatest player going. And I don't often check up on a squad before joining it.

My answer: I set a good example whenever I can.

Simple things like spawning on the SL, instead of whereever the heck you feel like it. Sticking WITH the SL. Using communication (preferable coms, but if you have to, type!).

Some examples:

The other day, myself and 2 buddies were playing and all hookd up on the Battle Coms. We were sticking together and moving well. Before long, other people were joining our squad and taking note of what we were doing. We became the dominant force on the map.
"Check that corner!"
"Roger, moving up... clear!"
"Moving now"
"Wait! Movement!"
"Nail 'em!"
"He's down"
"Moving up, keep it together!"
"I need cover!"
"Got your back, move!"

That's just a sample of the kind of communication we had going. It was hella fun! You should hear us yappin in a Blackhawk!
"Targets coimg up leftside!"
"Got it... hosing 'em!"
"RIGHT SIDE! AA!!"
"No prob, he's toast"
"Come around left! I see targets!"
"Coming around"
"We're hit! Man left gun, I'm making repairs."
"There's a tank below us. Can you mine him?"
"Yeah... move back a bit. Perfect!"
"Looks clear down there, coming down on the flag. Hop out for the capture!"
"Flag secure, coming down in the square. Mount back up!"

Remember, there were three of us that knew each other, but the whole bloody squad was talking like this by the time we'd really gotten things together.

I've found I don't even need buddies playing to get things moving. Generally, if you set a good example and chew on your squad mates a bit, things will fall in line.

"GUYS! YOU WANNA WIN OR WHAT?"
"Er, Gimp... we're trying"
"Start spawning on the SL! Start talkin, start spottin, 'n let's start winnin!"

This usually results in either a STFU (at which point I leave the squad) or teamwork begins to take place.

I'd like to challange EVERYONE here to start doing this.
Spawn on and stick with your SL. Talk to your squads. Get 'em to work together. Undestand that there is no such thing as a good SL if he's not backed up by good grunts!

Now get out there and start acting like a squad!!

That's good... just like real military ops, to bad they don't have hand signals. I want a hand signal for people who punish, I point to my butt. That means you smell like poo poo.

I like it also , when people are working in squads. Its so much more satisfying...and much less frustrating. U can truly rule on a map where there is good comms and coop.

I'd like to hear what you folks have to say on this issue!
Have you tried getting teamwork going? Got any amusing tales of suscess or failure? Any tips to pass along?

I just got through a bunch of pubbing and found that I could get squads together to be damned effective almost any time I desided to try. Even when there were no Battle Coms, I was able to get the idea of "teamwork" across.

Some tips I've found effective:
- Practice being the best squadie you can be. Always spawn on your SL... even if he is a dips:censored:t. Just stick with him. Groan if you must, but do everything you can to back him up. He's still your SL, afterall. Keep doing this and it gives you a better idea of what it's like to be the grunt and what you'll need of grunts when you are SL. You might even inspire some others to do the same.

- Make a custom squad that says something about what role you intend to take. This gives people an idea of what you intend right off the bat. I like "Mobile Ops" for flag grabbing and "Holding" for defensive work. Stick to that role and see how well you can do it.

- Don't be afraid to repeat messages in BIG CAPITAL LETTERS! Make sure they are green, too! Use the Squad chat ("L") to say things like "HEY GUYS! WE NEED TA STICK TOGETHER! SPAWN ON THE GREEN POINT!". Long messages and extra !!!s help get their attention.

- If you're an SL, don't be afraid to kick crapy squadies. There's people that just aren't worth havin around.

So if a commander orders your team to defend f.ex main base you actually do it? That would be the first. Usually when giving order the SL's tell me to shove it and **** off around the map. Instead I keep getting killed a bundle trying to hold off hoards of enemies.

And when there's a commander around they give stupid orders like instead of capturing the flag next to u bugger off to the other end of the map and defend some bleeding dungheap...

Last night the Tactical Gamer server had it's first European night (normally it only fills up at 3am GMT) and everything you descbibed was to be found on it. Squad members would choose their kit based on what was needed for the mission or what their SL asked them to take and people spoke, watching out for others, alerting team mates to trouble they had spotted....

It's pretty addictive once you experience it for the first time :)

I was on a squad doing so well the other night, it was the first time I heard the Commander say "Squad, divide up and form two squads!". We did, we won.

hmmm.... how come I keep getting all the lonewolves or first time commanders with issues about authority. Maybe I need a headset and huge storage of inspiring one-liners.

I do this all the time. Usually I am playing with my friends using Teamspeak. Since we all have the same prefix folks soon figure things out and usually we have one or two other good teamplayers in the squad aswell.
As a squad-leader I use the "T" button menu alot to give commands.
What really works great is if two guys in your squad are in the chopper to support the ground troops and knock out tanks and apcs.

I play with my friends most of the time and whever 3 of us are together and sticking together, we almost always have more people join our squad and stick with it. If they don't, we just boot em. We get good teamwork from people all the time.

yeah i use TS with my mate i play with but often we get aload of epople on our team and they can see what we're foing and like to join in and play as a team.

Playing as a team and kicking ass which you do is very very good fun and i think most people will try and join in with it given the choice because they know that'll they'll get more kills etc and have a lot more fun :)

Another good teamwork tactic particularly if your team is running short on flags is for SL's to leave the spawn point and hide about 50 to 100 yards from a flag in a secluded area so as not to get overrun. doesnt score many points for the SL but shows great leadership. I do that with a sniper rifle then i can guide my squad in by looking further ahead to give them ample warning of hostiles.

I could not agree with you more. Before I started playing with a regular group - or clan if you will - the best times of gaming was getting into a good squad.

There were times I found myself staying up til 4 and 5am on weeknights - just because I was in a kickass squad.

The funniest was one night that at about 4:30 I realized that I had 2 hours til I had to be out the door for work. So over comms I said - I hate to do this guys, but I gotta catch at least an hour of sleep before I have to go to work - I gotta log. Seconds later everyone else chimmed in and said - hell yeah I can't agree more, I just did not want to be the first one to leave - LMAO.

I find a good indicator when joining a server is to wait for 2 mins look at the map see what the guys are doing first, look at their kit and choose yours accordingly then get in and say Hi. Seems to work most of the time.
Nothing worse when commanding than seeing what flatstanley above me says happenin, happenin - You just know your gonna lose with two or three good people leading the opposition squads.
