last night on mashur I was a sniper commander. I hid (like all good commanders should do) and helped protect 1 base from a high advantage point. There was another sniper on our team that was on another roof top. I helped him stay alive and keep the base.
Spec op seen him and was shooting him like crazy. I turned and looked and BOOM. He never knew what hit him. I took out a few enemy soldiers and I was never shot at let alone killed.

If your a good sniper you will spot out enemy vehicles also normally you will find that they get alot of damage kill assits due to the fact the sniper rifle only takes 95 damage however i noramally take out gunners on tank and hummvers, also they tend to shoot other sniper who will be trying to shoot you and spot you, i would personnaly say there main jobis to damge people down to 2 bars of health which is a bitch for snipers as they don't get the kill.
If there more a assulting sniper then they will put claymores in places where the enemy won't see them before there dead.

I've also noticed that a sniper can be hella handy for keeping the enemy pinned while other troops move in to take a CP, regaurdless if the sniper can actually tag anyone.

The psycological threat of a sniper seems to keep people from moving when they really should be. That alone is a good reason to keep 'em handy.

I'm glad to see that most of you folks are thinking of the win and not just points.

This, I've done. About the only time I take a sniper kit is when I'm commander and want to lay claymores to keep me arse safe while I'm hiding.

Hehe, if you check my stats I picked up a basic sniper badge, but only have 1 (1!!) sniper rifle kill (at this time).
Told ya I'm a lousy sniper.

I know i was playing on Oman, and we were all riding in on a boat to take the central beach point.. we all piled out of the boat and started charging the island, i layed out on the beach and started to take guys out when they began to confront my teamies, it was cool and fun to take em out right when they turned a corner

how do we contribute:

when you come to a flag and the enemy support class guarding the flag opens up on you, your sure to die then suddenly the firing stops.

your in a tank and right next to the flag (for some unknown reason) and you change your view to 3rd person to notice theres unblown c4 on your tank and a dead guy next to you.

you are fighting at a distance with a squad of enemy and you see somebody respawn off another guy, moments later you see the enemy squad leader go down then the medic go down when trying to revive the squad leader. the rest of the squad stop shooting and gets behind a object. you fly over the enemy main base in a aircraft and see all aircraft sitting on spawn pads.

seeing enemy troops/vehicles searching for sombody in the brush near the runway. (always satisfying knowing they using resources to kill you while your teams are still being used for taking flags)

And what your K/D does?

Snipers can only kill other infantry, once in a while they may hit a chopper pilot and take down a chopper, but thats fairly rare.

Everyone knows the rounds are won and lost with vehicle superiority, and snipers cannot do anything against vehicles.

SF can destroy anything if they get close enough inclusing assets, AT can destroy tanks, apcs, and transport and sometimes choppers. Assault can destroy transport.

Then theres the teamwork classes, medics keep squads healthy and alive, support keeps you tooled up, and engineers fix your vehicles and assets.

All of the above classes can also kill infantry.

Its easy to see which the least useful class is, in terms of winning rounds is. The reality is that most snipers will hide on a hill somewhere and get 5-10 kills in the round, without capping a flag, healing, fixing, resupplying, or helping other infantry by removing vehicle threats. And they will think they've had a good round (whilst their team lost the round 150-0). There are of course exceptions, but in general thats the rule.

Edit, my 15 hours of sniping were solely to reach veteran, and consisted of helo piloting. Check my driver points for the amount of death my copliots will rain down when I'm flying for them. The few rounds I've sniped I usually go about 20-5, but I just hate being a sniper, it is a total waste of time. I am a team player and if im not helping any teammates I dont see the point of playing.

remind me to get the screenshot of me at the end of the round with 55kills 10 deaths and forget the number of teamwork points from assists =(.

o and before you say that 1 its not true i assure you it is when i return home nov 19th ill make a post on these forums with the screenie.

and say all iwas doing was whoring kills i was in a position i could A. get lots of kills :p B. defend 2 flags from being taken... defend points are sexy.

and yes i cant do anything against tanks and apc's but i can spot them and hope for the best

.. not true ... once I distracted a APC driver that much by permanently shooting at his vehicle that he started calling that "shooter" a *insert*insult*regarding*sexual*favors*here* ... I was laughing my ass off watching him shooting at every treeline he could see. Aprox 1 minute later he finaly got bown up by a SpecOps whom I spotted the apc.

I ran out of bullets ... but it was worth it

ah yes i forgot about being able to take off armor health with the 50 i used to shoot tanks with the m24 before i unlocked the 50cal just to watch their turret swivel around but stopped because i was wasting to much ammo. will have to start this up again with a ammo crate near me of course =)

The official purpose of the sniper class is to harass and demoralize the enemy. The actual purpose of the sniper class is to completely outsmart everyone else on the battlefield. We will catch you with your pants down.

We are not a big scoring, big glory class. But that's okay. We don't like being noticed.

... unfortunately, in BF2, we cant really demoralize the enemy since most of them are more afraid of is not getting their plane/chopper/tank than of dieing :hmm:
