Re: To anyone who is commander...

    Lets get this straight..

Your teammates DO NOT need to request a UAV.

You should be providing them at will.. and they should be constant.

    I do

Also, dont just UAV yourself all game.. thats just lame.

Never do this, on the next scan available, i'll check if enemies are near me

If your assets (uav trailer, artillery, scan sat) are damaged...
DROP SUPPLIES ON THEM..NOT JUST CLOSE.. but ON THEM..
This means you need to use your zoom on your map, MORONS.

    I do that anyways

If youre one of these commanders who thinks you dont have to do
anything until someone asks you for a uav, supplies, then you are
mistaken... While the other team has a constant flow of UAVS
we are left in the dark and havent a clue where enemies are, or
    where to go.

I constanly provide UAV support, drop supplies to whoever may need it, and scan as musch as possible, i rarely come out of the commander screen, the only times i do, is when i need to move, or if there are enemies attacking me

USELESS COMMANDERS RUIN MORE GAMES THAN ANY OTHER PROBLEM
    IN BF2...imo.

    Agreed.

If EA/DICE had any brains at all they would have fixed the voting in
this game.. mutinys are pointless.. map votes...pointless.

Im sick of useless, or self serving commanders.. 9 out of 10 people
who command my team have no clue what they are supposed to be
doing..so they just help themselves all game...

Remeber, they bought it, so they can do whatever they like

    rant over.

That said, your suggestion that the Commander not supply his troops is just wrong. Forget points for a minute and consider actually trying to win the round. Which approach is going to help the team more? When you're guys are down there, they've run out of grenades or C4 or whatever, the supplies can turn the tide. Same thing with vehicles. Yes, it would be great if that hero of heros, the engineer, voluntarily left cover and dashed through the bullets to put a wrench on your smoking tanks. But he's hamburger in a few seconds anyways. Much easier to stay where it's safe and let the armor retreat behind the lines to repair and let the Engineer harass the enemy in other ways.

And in case you are counting points, the Commander gets double points for winning. :)

JMHO. I was wrong once before.
If the voting in BF2 was fixed.. we'd definately have more mutinys..
and no, Im not one to jump off and start a mutiny at the first sign of
a problem... but when 2-3 minutes go by without a UAV.. you know
      the commander is worthless. period.

UAVs are free...so are supplies... why not use them CONSTANTLY.
Why should a teammate have to request one? If the commander is
doing his job, he would know where we needed one before we even
      asked..

I hate seeing worthless commanders get the 2x bonus.. makes me puke.

What's worse than a bad commander is bad squad leaders. I consider myself a decent commander, but you can be the best commander in the universe and if you squad leaders ignore you, your team loses.

I've scanned with the sat and seen eneimies moving to a cp and commanded a nearby squad to move to that position and hear them acknolege and accept the command. Then I'll put UAV support on that cp just to watch the squad leader ignore my command and go the other way.

I've had stupid squad leaders request bombardment for one non-sniper enemey and when I provide it, they don't move even after me telling them that "artillery is in your area", they stay there, get killed and i get the tk.

Then, after all this frustration, I get a mutiny vote started against me. So I think, "OK, you think you can do so much better, I'll resign." And so I resign only to have no one take over the commander position.

BF2 would be so much more fun if you could rely on all your teammates to play their chosen roll. But it seems more often than not that most people play as if it were a non-team based deathmatch and that CPs are non-existant.

I agree 100%. It's a lot easier to win with good squad leaders and a bad or no commander than it is with a great commander and crappy squad leaders.

To SpeedyGonzales: I feel your pain. The only advise I can give is when in doubt ask. As commander or squad leader, one of the first things I do is talk to the squad leaders / commanders. If you don't hear back from them on voice or team chat, chances are you're pretty much going to be on your own.

If they based commander requirements on team score that might be a better solution. Sicne if a person has a high team score they are probably more apt to do a good job...IMO

ok crazy u r then, but how can u learn what mistakes ur making in single player. u need to play with other people with experience so they can give u the tips u need. Only others can tell u what ur doing wrong, or how u can do it better. All the games ive played commander, people have been happy to give me instruction and advice.
Dont get me wrong crazy but i can understand the frustration, but sometimes u need to help those with a little less experience than urself.

I disagree about the assets a little, you should try and get an engineer to fix first, as it's more team points for them and you.

Try to consider that your tactic as commander will not work in all situations and that there are other tactics available to use as the commander. If you want to discuss this more, PM me as I'm sick of the constant flaming and arguing on these boards.

There are more ways to command than just the process you have described and by limiting yourself to one way you will lose games. By adapting you stand a better chance of winning.

Just to let you know i have a total of 8 secs (in 104 hours of play) as commander in ranked servers , haven't really been bothered as my thought was someone will always out rank me & will do better than me. So please don't flame me, it's just my initial impression.

Anyway, tried it out for the first time on an unranked 32 man server last night. I can't believe how quick scan, uav etc recharge. I always thought it took longer because whenever I asked for it as a SL, I got it about 5mins later.
You can just about uav all the time. Scan just before hand, then uav where your squads need it. One thing you guys didn't post. If you uav one area after a scan, you can still spot people who are in other areas to help the rest of the team. It's as easy as click, zoom in, spot, zoom out. Helps loads when you need 2 uav at once.

I did nothing but sit in an isolated corner near my assets & command. With scan, you can easily see when someone is coming to destroy assets. Don't uav, just spot them. Quick & painless, also gives you chance to take them out. Played as sniper so just poped them before they laid the c4, & let engineer repair them if they were destroyed.

I'm so bummed it wasn't on a ranked server, got the best score I have ever had. 178 (after 2x for my teams awesome win ), which I believe is a good score if it takes the teams avg score +/- a few extra points. And this was the first time I had ever played commander! LOL, didn't even bother with single player.

Commanding is pretty straight forward if you use your brains, a bit of strategy & loads of uav & spotting. Oh, and arty where there are no suqads. Er, I forgot to add, I had 1 arty team kill and about 38 arty kills.

Nice post. Your use of l33t sp3ak really helps hammer home your point.

I think what the original poster was trying to say is that you have serveral options when you are first learning to play the Commander. They are the same options that people use when learning any aspect of the game like flying or using the various kits. You can play single player. Or, you can get on low population ranked servers if you want it to count towards your score. The lower the population, the greater the chance you will get to play Commander at the lower ranks. Simple.

Yeah, that goes for any suggestion on these forums. You have to know when to apply them. In my case, I was just listing my most common pattern. But you are right, there are lots of variations based on the circumstances.

Asking if support is needed falls under "Commander Actions" in the scoring system. the X factor in the commander formula. I would encourage any commander to poll his squads before making the deployment of assets.

To be a good commander you need good squads, it is not about artying red dots. imho removing the teamkill rate for arty has hurt the game. Now any prick can arty his own squads with impunity.

You missed my point man, That is all good but to learn how to use all the aspects of the commander you should first practice it in single player. I did this and I'm sure many other people did too...The worse thing you can do for a team is be commander and not know how to use the simple functions...I have seen people ask how to place supplies how to accept requests etc etc... this is all fundamental things and if these people took the time to learn first then they wouldnt be making themselves look a fool...ya know....

Oh and yes I am crazy
