A Gunners guide to being a good Chopper Pilot

Awhile back someone did a pilots guide to being a good gunner so I thought I'd do a guide from the gunner's perspective. I am by no means the best gunner in the world but here are some ideas of what I like to see in a pilot. Being in voice contact via voip either in a squad or through something like teamspeak is great but not absolutely necessary (I'd still recommend voice contact even if only one has a mic it can still be darn handy)

    1. Your goals as a chopper pilot
You have 2 goals as a pilot.

    1a. Keep us alive
This is your primary goal as a pilot. I can't do diddly squat to dodge the missles from that plane or AA vehicle. That's your job. If it's between lining up a shot on an AA vehicle that's shooting at us or dodging behind a hill where he can't shoot us go behind the hill and sneak up on him another way. If he's got us locked up then do any evasive action you can think of to keep us alive until we're behind that hill and he can't shoot at us. Don't worry about me I keep plenty of air sick bags stocked. I'll almost always ride a chopper down in a blaze of glory (doesn't say much for my inteligence does it?) rather than bail out so if you fail at this I'll see you back at the chopper spawn point.

1b. Getting me in position to kill stuff
This is your second goal. My TV Missiles can kill anything in the game with one shot so it's your job to get me in a position to use them. The chain gun works good against infantry or if I miss with the missile but don't count on me using it as a primary weapon against vehicles. To shoot a TV missile give me at least 2 seconds where we're not moving around violently to line up a shot (as long as it doesn't interfere with 1a). After you see the missile fly off then do all the acrobatics you want because I'm going to be watching the missile cam the whole way in.

    2. Where can my gunner shoot?
I can use the chaingun in about a 180 degree arc towards the front of the chopper. That means if it's in front of us I can generally hit it unless it's too high or low. For height I can aim to just above your cross hair. The only chopper I did extensive testing on was the Cobra and I could aim the gun to approximately half way from the crosshair to the top of the bars on either side of the HUD. Aiming down is harder to determine but near as I can figure I can aim down approximately 60 degrees from the front of the chopper.

For TV Missiles I'm looking straight ahead in a narrow angle so aim the chopper at whatever you want me to destroy. Somewhere near your crosshairs seems to work good.

    3. Attacking a base
    3a. Base is empty
There's nobody at a base and we can cap it. Fine. Hover over the flag slowly rotating so I can keep an eye out for vehicles or infantry. Don't yell at me to hop out so we can capture the flag faster I'm not going to do it. We may capture the flag slightly faster but I won't be nearly as efficive at protecting the chopper on the ground. Not to mention if you have to do a quick get away from the squad that just showed up I get left behind and usually turned into a swiss cheese.

3b. Base is being fought over by ground forces
The best way to handle this is to orbit the base from a slight distance making sure I'm facing the bad guys at all times. This will give me the best chance to rack up the kills while minimizing our exposure to ground fire. If we start taking heavy fire see 1a above. This also works with the transport chopper you just have to keep the side I'm on
DO NOT try to hover over the flag to get capture points. All you're going to do is get us turned into swiss cheese and/or I'm going to reach back there and smack you silly!

    4. You see a tank/APC/AA vehicle
4a. I'm looking straight at it but not firing the chaingun
I'm probably lining up a TV missile shot (or waiting for you to line me up). Give me a few seconds (see 1b) to get a missile off then you can do your strafing run. If I haven't fired in the 2 seconds then it means I probably don't see the same thing you do (see 4b). Tanks and APCs have a limit on how high they can aim their main guns, try to keep us above that, or come from a direction they aren't looking, and we'll own them. If you want to duck behind a hill and move us to a better firing position where he won't see us until it's too late that's fine with me, especially if it's an AA vehicle and he sees us.

4b. I'm looking the other way
Tell me about it. Use the spot command, call out on voice, something. If I'm looking off to one side it means I've seen something I think is worth shooting at and I probably don't know there's anything in front of us to shoot at.

    5. There's another chopper
5a. He doesn't see us or sees us but is not bothering us in any way
Line me up for a TV missile shot (see 1b) and I'll do my best to knock him down the easy way. If I miss and he doesn't react then wait for me to take a second shot. If he does react, especially if he turns towards us to fight, or I miss a second time go ahead and do your strafing run and I'll plink away with the chain gun.

5b. He sees us and is shooting at us
If you get a chance to let me shoot at him by all means do so as long as it doesn't interfere with keeping us alive. Try to keep him in my firing arcs (see 1b above) and try to keep us out of his gunners firing arcs.

    6. We're damaged and we need to fly back to base to repair
While we're hovering over the chopper pad/supply crate repairing and reloading aim me towards the enemy so I can fire off TV Missiles. Odds are I won't hit anything, but I do get hits often enough to make firing them off worth while. Besides, we'll get reloaded by the pad/crate so it's not like we've lost anything.

    7. You want to fly with your friend but I've jumped in the gunners seat before him
Ask me nicely to hop out. If I'm in a good mood I'll let him have the seat. If I say negative don't just sit there yelling 'get out'. I got here first deal with it I'm not going to get out if you spend the rest of the round yelling at me. Also do not go fly into a hill or deliberately crash the chopper so your buddy can get another chance to get the gunners seat. If you do that the first thing I'm going to do is respawn and kick you in the ding ding. Then I'm going to switch teams and make it my goal for the rest of the round, and probably the next one, to kill any chopper I see that might possibly be you.

Hopefully this guide will help someone and give pilots an idea what your gunner expects.

Nice guide! - ok, I wrote this before reading the post, but I love these kind of guides.

I wholly agree with you on all those points. I'm not the world's greatest pilot but I do try to let my gunner rack up the kills. The chances are much better for him to destroy the enemy than for me to dip my nose and hit the deck in the middle of enemy fire.

I am definitely one of those pilots that makes gunners airsick, lol, but stick with it, more often or not, I get us out. And if I don't, I'll apologize while we wait for it to respawn.

Good guide.. as a PILOT I think you missed pointing out one thing though... and that's the pilot's unguided rockets.

A skilled pilot with a skilled gunner will only use these as a last resort, since pointing the nose of the chopper down generally screws the gunner over for a good few seconds. ALWAYS let your gunner take a shot with the TV missle before rocketing.

Oh, and speaking of which, a tip for pilots on rocket strafeing: Before you nose-down, cut your throttle to zero. Nose down, line up your shot, fire a salvo, go 100% power and pull straight back on the stick. That way you wont fly straight into the ground after you get your shot off. If you get good enough at it, you can get a salvo off at a tank without breaking hover.. It's surprising how many helicopters I still see trying to rocket a tank and flying straight into a building or the ground in front of it.

          Great Guide! Very in depth.

I spend most of my time flying the chopper while my buddy is gunner. Its good to know what is going on in the gunners head.

A question that I have is, once the TV missle goes off does your guidance get affected when i start to fly fast out of the area or do any evasive action. And what is the average reload time of the TV missle, I don't want to hover too long (easy target for the enemy).

Another thing I would like to add. When you were writing about getting into a chopper that wants their buddy to gun. I would rather have you join my squad so we can communicate VIA microphone. If your a better gunner i'll take you anyday!!

One more thing what is a Ding Ding

This guide is brilliant. I wish I could make every player read it.

The reload time on a TV Missile is about 7 seconds. Once the missile fires all I see is the missile cam until it hits or I switch to the gun, so you doing barrel rolls shouldn't affect it.

Being in voice contact would be best and I always try to be in the squad with my pilot. However, not everyone has a microphone and I wanted to make it useful for everyone wether they had a mic or not.

An addition from an adept gunner to the pilots: Aside from avoiding hills, buildings, trees, the ground, and telephone poles; do NOT crash into another helicopter! I don't care, how weak we both are, nor if its just a fender-bender, because chances are; you just killed your passenger/gunner!!! Do you feel guilty? Ya should! If it happens once, I'll try to understand, but if it happens twice, I'm going to be the worst side seat driver in history, by pointing out every single infantry and barking requests... Okay, maybe not, but please, don't suck twice in a row.

Re: A Gunners guide to being a good Chopper Pilot

                  Yup, good guide.

As a gunner aware chopper pilot, I'm familiar with perty much everything you said... but I'm hella glad you said it!
This could also be read backwards... I've had some utterly crap gunners in my helos!

                  A couple notes for gunners;

Gunners should try to spot things as much as possible while they are blazing away. Spotting an enemy helo is a HUGE help when I'm twisting for position! Spotting ground targets let's me line up better for strafing passes.

A good gunner should be able to tell from the pilot's actions whether he should be in guns or TVGM mode. If the pilot is obviously lining up to do a rocket pass, chances are you should be supporting him via TVGMs. If he's moving slowly and has his nose in the air, you'll want to be in gun mode.

DON'T waste your shots at distant/unhittable targets OR just fan away for no good reason. Suppression fire into hotzones is good, but pointless fire only builds up heat and attracts attention. The worst instances of this I've seen is when I'm trying to close on an enemy attack chopper that hasn't seen me yet, and the gunner opens up on him while we're still half a fricken map away! There goes our suprise!

Don't be a chicken! I hate it when my gunner bails out at the first sign of trouble. I have a habbit of pulling off miricals in getting out of tight situations (there's nothing like coming down on the chopper pad while on fire and down to one half a bar to make you go "Wheew!"). I'll also pull off some rather insane stunts to shake attackers off (I've got chopper looping down). It's annoying when my gunner misreads what I'm doing as being out of control, bails, then I have to go back for him (usually, I won't. I'll find someone with more guts).

Something that should be said, is that untill VOIP comms is established, Ya'll are just a gunner and a pilot riding the same vehicle. With voice, you can become a crew. Being able to speak makes ALLLLLLL the diffrence.

Something that I posted a while back, and have quoted a couple of times that would be a nice compliment to this:

I then gave it a 50% opacity so that it is relatively see through - so that both screen reticules can be seen at the same time.

I think you will find it was effective.

The first set I forgot to turn off the hud and mini map.

                          Agreed and even better:
Do that on our server = ban

No intentional ramming of aircraft - you get warned, then you get banned. Plain and simple.

Why? Those rams - are the same as TK's, and more often than not (not as bad since patch) actually show the TK.

One thing I would add to this is watch your pilot if it looks like he's out of control. If he bails out it might be a good idea to follow him. What's happened to me a fair amount since the latest patch is that I'll hop in the gunner's seat and whoever the pilot is will want to fly with his buddy, or worse solo, and start a roll right after take off and bail out so the chopper crashes and I die but he doesn't get a TK. If this happens you can either bail out before the chopper crashes or switch to the pilots seat and try to recover. I tend to play it by ear and if we're high enough I'll switch to the pilots seat, recover, and fly off leaving smacktard pilot cussing at you (usually). If I'm in a squad with someone that's near by I'll land and pick them up on the way out just to add insult to injury.

As a chopper gunner and sometimes a pilot I have a little addon

4b. I'm looking the other way
Tell me about it. Use the spot……..

If we have no means of communication verbally, and u don’t have time to spot,

                              fire a single rocket.
You don’t have to hit anything just shoot.
This WILL alert me and I will swing round to face forward or switch to missiles as fast as possible.
Please remember that you can see were I’m looking on your HUD.
Even if I’m facing forward (on your HUD), and I’m still not firing,
Please don’t start bitching; I’m probably looking down so I can’t see the target.

                              5b. Sec 2
He sees us and is shooting at us…….
                              Altitude is your friend.
Try to gain altitude, more is better.
Remember that my gun can shoot down at things u cannot see.
I can keep hitting our enemy even in a chopper turning war.
Don’t worry I’ll keep spotting him.
If we have the height advantage chances are that the other chopper
will point it’s nose up to shoot at us,thereby losing even more altitude.

                              This gives us several advantages.
We can easily escape then he can’t see us.
He will crash into something when he keeps loosing altitude, problem solved
We can dive onto him shooting your rockets and my gun (or missile),
and he will be a larger target when we come from above.

                              8. I’m firing my gun but u can’t see the target

Use the HUD to see my general direction and turn towards my target.
This will help me track my target if it moves, and make it a lot easier to kill.

                              Just my 2 cents
