    Booted for language... my $0.02

I am writing this because I am personally an analytical person. I feel that the only way for me to see the light that others have apparently seen is for me to ask them right out why it is that they do what they do. That said, I have a question for all the admins and server owners out there who put a filter on their servers that catch language.

Although you pay for the server and you're well within your rights to administer any rules you see appropriate, I must ask, why, in a game that awards merit for shooting people in the face with a bazooka, picking off people from a distance with a .50 caliber sniper rifle intended to disable vehicles, gives awards for sneaking up behind people and slitting their throats with a knife, etc. would you deem it inappropriate for me to tell the jackass on my team who just teamkilled me point blank with a shotgun to "FCK OFF"?

I must know why in a game that is rated Teen 13+ the server admins must take it upon themselves to administer what words should and shouldn't be said?

Now, I have heard such arguments as:

"I want to keep the family atmosphere in my server" -- I really don't think an 8-year-old should be playing a game in which you shoot people for points

"Some people in here aren't 18+" -- Have you EVER been 13? Personally, I heard more swearing in middle school than I hear at a COLLEGE FRAT PARTY!

"It's supposed to be a fun game" -- Again, we're shooting people for points in this game... it is fun; for those who are mature enough to play it... if you don't want your 8 year old seeing curses, don't let him play a game where he carries an M16 and blows people to bits with a grenade launcher. It's a VIOLENT game intended for MATURE people... GET OVER IT

Just looking to see if anyone else feels my pain, or if the Admins of these "Disneyland" servers have any wonderful insight that might allow me to see your side, given my points above.

    Thanks

        :blabla: :blabla: :blabla:
I came looking for something new, and you make no "new" compelling arguements.

It always amazes me how people always argue that it is a game about violence and for that reason, I should expect to and be perfectly fine reading some moron typing in cuss words.

Team kills are punished, team killers are booted off servers, you adding an explitive as you punish is important.... why ??

hehe.. TK-421, why aren't you at your post?

when I'm playing a game I normally never type.. too busy whacking people..

The one time I was on a server and got kicked for saying 'f*ck' after being bombed for the 12th time in a row I just labelled them a 'kiddyground server' and avoided it like the plague.. there ARE other servers out there, you know? And not all of them are run by moralizing twats, either

I'm sorry, but i totally agree with you. I dont agree w/ blatent misuse to the right to curse. However, that being said. Someone who t.k.'s should have a virus sent to his/her computer. But some of the funniest moments playing have been when you are traveling w/ someone in a squad and are so close to winning the last flag and you loose it, to let out a load "SH*T!!!!" is so funny it makes me cry. So why cant you type it? First off, you should keep all chatter within your squad. Secondly, if someone does TK you. Let it go!!! Get them later, believe me they owe you one at that point. Take full advantage when running for that tank, plane or humvee. If there gonna beat you there, take full advantage of their back being to you. If this is a mature game talk like it and act like it, that is something that will always go in your favor.

To me, it is all very simple.

When a person verbally shouts an expletive, it is more of an automatic reaction and less deliberate than taking the time to type something vulgar.

It takes a bit of effort to stop gaming and actually type in cuss words. Because of this, it is seen as a more agressive behavior and therfore, less desirable.

Re: Booted for language... my $0.02

Well, being an analytical sort of person myself . . .

I think your argument is way off. There is nothing inherently unreasonable about having a language filter. It really doesn't matter what the game's about - it's a game.

Appeals to a notion that it's such a violent game that somehow it's appropriate for people to use unwanted language during the game just don't make a lot of sense. There is no relationship between foul language and violence. I know plenty of military personnel who are very foul mouthed -- but I also know lots who are not.

Also, I think some people have swear filters to try and control exchanges before they get out of hand. You might call them "disneyland" servers, but I get really tired of the alternative -- two or three yahoos exchanging the same invitation to sex over and over:

                    Fck you
                    No, fck you, dude
                    Fck you
Fck you double you fcker . .

                    repeat, over and over

I've seen this type of thing just take over a screen while the idiots go on and on.

So, to my mind, it makes sense to have swear filters if the server owners want them. They don't deprive anyone of any real liberties -- if you're upset with someone, you can say what you feel without resorting to forbidden words.

He just wanted other people to know how frusterated he was, thats all. Next time use a mic and press the key to turn on the mic in game and sound off with a loud and thunderous, "FF********CCCCCCCKKKKKKKKKKK!!!!!!!!!!!"

Arkasha... I completely agree... that can get annoying... and yeah it does take extra effort to type curses into the game. I just don't quite understand why people are so sensitive to it.

and Yeah, Cotizi... I was just playign with you. You got disconnected so I sorta lost interest

Automatic, that is another annoying thing about those filters, they're indiscriminate.

the other annoyign thing is sometimes you'll type it once and not see the warning and some idiots in Disneyland servers don't write "no language" in the little message box as you're loading the map... they just expect that you won't do it.

You said it yourself. It is a game for mature people. Where I come from it is neither considered mature nor polite to say this in front of complete strangers you've never seen before.

If you are so insistent on swearing why don't you dish out the few bucks for your own swearing server?
