I suck at sniping....ah wait a minute....I basically am bad on every kit.... But a moving target is a waste i've found out...that just annoys the heck out of them. Like when I was being sniped at it hit me, but just kept moving, I actually lasted in a flag capture that he was supposedly defending (pushing A and D continuously but I did it). Luckily I was medic to revive, I didn't even want to try to find the bastard, I moved on, you could hear his 5 shots dingin the ground buildings, I guess I was lucky, esp since I am a newb.

go for the head or at least centre mass every time. Youll get the kills.

thank god the sniper rifles are not dominating and take some skill in this game...sniping is a fun challenge (love long range headshots on medics JUST as the paddles go down for the revive...oh no you dont!

if you have ever played any realism-based mods with powerful rail-like sniper guns (e.g. Action Q2, Q3 Urbanterror) you will know how annoying an "easy" sniper rifle can be.

Re: Help being a sniper - I suck

If your USMC always use the M24 unelss your sniping an airstrip.

I consider myself a good shot; the secret is to be... PATIENT! Yes, if your inpatient sniping is not for you. I find myself mostly watching a target for about twenty seconds before I take a shot. Remember, if they're sprinting full speed, they always have to slow down. And, if you wait long enough, an infantryman will ALWAYS stop. Quickly take this moment and pop him one in the head.

As you get better, practice shooting while they're running. It's really not hard; just track your target with your crosshair dead on them and match their running speed with your aim. When your satisfied, take a shot. Just remember that once you miss, they run, they hop and they prone.

FIND COVER! Never snipe out of a bush. When I'm getting shot at, I instantly scan all bushes. Bushes = bad. Bushes = good for claymores. :)

Re: Help being a sniper - I suck

Just a little point on the aiming.... especially with the M24. If they're facing towards me, i'll aim for the brim of their helmet. this way, its still 1sk if you get it, and if you're over a distance you're allowing for the bullet drop. Also, never shoot at a moving target, at least for a while. stationary targets are so much nicer and easier to hit.

and one other thing.... dont shoot shoot shoot shoot shoot quickly! esp with the semis, because for every shot you fire you make your location a lot clearer to other people. firing them off rapidly, unless of course you're able to 1sk each target every time, will give your possie away like putting a neon sign up, or having a support bloke spam 'NEED AMMO?' all around you whilst bunnyhopping in circles.

The chinese sniper rifle is the best, even better than the M95....The SVD is almost as good as the chinese rifle...

Lol thats so funny cause its true!

Also , if you have a cooperating commander, you can also use supply crates as bait, esp. in karkland. Have them drop out in the open street and get in a position where you are flanking the crates position, i guarentee several enemys will be diving behind the crate for some ammo/nade spammage and then light em up.

Thanks for all your suggestions - some very sneaky monkey's out there - exxxcccellent.

As for you my young friend - I hope that a whole brigade of hairy USMC (or MEC actually) come to your home and bugger the crap out of you. It would serve you right for being such an irritant to other players

                        So there.

                        Many thanks to everyone else

Re: Help being a sniper - I suck

I find that most people suck as snipers because of one simple fact that is not immediately apparent. Try running around with any other weapon (bar knives, grenades etc.) and your crosshair changes in size the more recently you have moved it. Even if you are stationary but change where you are looking the reticule expands when moving and contracts when still. The same is true for a zoomed sniper rifle, though the reticule does seem to contract quicker than on other guns. The difference with a sniper rifle is the change in reticule size is hidden by the sight graphic itself.

My biggest tip - if the target is stationary, aim for their head, let the crosshair stay stationary for a second then shoot (holding left mouse to see where your shot actually goes). That way you will get one hit kill if you hit the head or seriously injure them otherwise. Really, if shooting another sniper or someone repairing a vehicle you have no excuse to not kill them in one go. For a moving target, predict where they are going to be then aim ahead, letting the reticule rest so they run into your sights. That way the crosshair has contracted again and the shot will go where you want it to. Don't worry about a target moving so erratically you can't hit them - that's a sign of someone aware they are at risk of being sniped - another target will come along soon enough.

Though the tip for using a pistol to finish off a wounded target is a valid one I personally don't like it. The satisfaction of a one or two shot sniper kill is much more appealing to me when I'm in "sniper mode" :)

                          Also...
                          1) Bullet drop does exist but only at extreme ranges. If you are sniping at this kind of range your "super sniper spot" is probably too far from the action, move in closer.
                          2) Bullet travel time exists but only after a fashion. It's called latency, and not part of the engine. To compensate, don't aim ahead of a target, just aim for the edge of the target in the direction they are moving.
                          3) Don't go near cranes.
                          4) If you kill or injure someone from a given location, move - even if the spot is good. If I get sniped I ALWAYS go after the sniper and because they don't move it's simply one easy knife or defib kill. Better still, move and plant a claymore so when people go to your old spot you get them.
                          5) Plant your claymores in "enemy heavy" places. Plant them near your own flags too, in spots where you would go for cover if you were capping. Rarely do your own team spawn then run to a friendly flag, they run to vehicles etc. No sense in keeping your claymores as when you die you get your fresh ones.
                          6) Don't go near cranes.
                          7) If USMC, ignore the M95. The M24 is strong enough for one shot kill headshots and 2 shot kill chest shots, the same as the M95.
                          8) If MEC/PLA use the M95. The SVD is good but the M95 is better, provided you go for realistic, measured shots and don't expect to shoot helmets off from 1km away.
                          9) Only snipe on appropriate maps. IMO good sniping maps are Mashtuur or Clean Sweep and maybe Kubra Dam. Karkand is OK, but very "busy" and the fog means you're under pressure to kill quickly. Sharqi is horrendous for me as all the lines of sight are blocked. Maps like Fusche, Oman and Dragon Valley are too vehicle heavy so you will not be able to reliably find targets. Of course my preferences will be different to yours but I think my reasons are pretty valid.

Any thoughts? Would be interested in a reasoned discussion :)

Re: Help being a sniper - I suck

Here are my two cents based on my experience so far...(I am not a great sniper, but I have gotten better playing the way I do...and reading these forums..ha ha ha)....they are in no particular order

                            1. look for distance markers....ie flags, supply crates, damaged commander assets and the such and pretty much guage the distance between you and your soon to be dead target. The farther the target the higher you aim....

                            2. Be prepared to travel on foot alot and by yourself..... it is a pain but deal with it. There is no sense using vehicles to give away your position someone is always watching you...if it catches my eye I will look.

                            3. Study the maps a bit you can learn a lot from just looking around. Knowing your surroundings and escape routes is essential.

                            4. I agree with countersniping...this is a valuable asset. Along with number 3, you can see where shots are coming from if you know where to look first...then again when you are being hunted by a good sniper then you are hurting.....

                            5. If you are playing with a squad or if you are playing lone wolf communication is key. Not only are you watching your squad's back, but you are contributing to the team overall. Announce enemy movement when you see it so your team will know if they are about to walk into a hot zone.

                            6. Concealment is key...this also goes along with number three...you will find areas on the map where you are pretty much invisible to your enemy. I have had enemies run past me without even noticing I am there. Make your self a hard target for snipers and counter snipers...the smaller you look in their scope the harder it is for them to get you on their first shot

                            7. Claymores are a double edged sword to me. If the enemy gets killed by your claymore (which is good), they will be looking for you when they comeback.....(I would..ha ha ha). Now the bad part....say you move away from your position because you know you have been compromised but you left a claymore, you run the risk of the twitchy finger disease and bam you get punished even though your teammate has warnings on his screen lit up like a christmas tree. So watch where you place them.

                            8. Populated areas are great.....at a distance. There is no need for you to go all gung ho when your weapons are not all that great for CQB. You have to rely on your handy dandy knife and pistol....which I suck at anyway. Unless you are good at CQB situations, don't waste your lives.

                            9. Movement is everything....If you miss your shot, move or you will be hunted down. Even if you kill someone move....unless you are shooting fish in a barrel (massive conflict) someone will either fire at you or just sneak up on you. If you get killed, find a new spot so your hunter (which will more than likely be another sniper) will have to determine the distance between you and him.

                            10. Finally, once you become proficient at using your rifle, Learn to lead your shots (I am a firm believer in leading shots after playing with a higher ping for a couple of years...on other games...go 56k!). At mid range (100~200m) it is really possible to kill someone running or heck moving if you can predict where your enemy is going to be when you fire your shot. This really has to do with your latency obviously the faster latency you have you can shorten the distance between your shot and your target (I average between 100~175 for my latency with a fiber connection in Japan playing on a stateside server). If the enemy is a hopper, wait till he gets tired and take your shot.

I hope this helps you out....

Another point I can't make stongly enough...

Even as a lone wolf, form your own squad and lock it. Not only can you then be ordered to do stuff but you can also request crates/arty/UAV when you need them.

There really is no reason to ever, ever be a lone wolf.
