    Going prone & zoom

I noticed how many people go prone when they see someone and start firing. Is it recommended to go prone or nay? Do ya'll recommend going towards the person and going prone, just drop and don't move forward, or prone going to the side to do a roll? Do you also zoom in right when going prone, after, before? I'm always having a problem where I go prone and end up dead really quick. I go prone and once down I zoom in. Is that too slow? I don't have terrible reflexes, but not great ones either.

Going prone increases accuracy and reduces your visible surface area (makes it easier to get those important 1-shot kills and to reduce the effect of being hit from 'spray & pray' type players)

This is a really good question. But to answer that I have to go way back to my basic training but when you hit the ground in the pron position after seeing another player. You have to assume that he has seen you also. So rolling is a good tactic. Except where your already in cover and you may roll out of cover. Which, of course, not healthy for you. As far as aiming goes. I try to roll with my sights ready. Now with all this done and said, Hell, I didn't even know we could roll in BF2. Have to go see.

if im faced with someone then i usually drop prone dont move and fire. by not moving im not screwing up my aim, usually we find out how effective i was when the fight ends 3 secs later (either me or him died) although sometimes ive found myself reloading, which i now get up and run for nearest cover (if there is any)

again its mostly down to the conditions you face at the time and you have limitless scenarios to play out, so just keep at it and you'll find you get alot better at noticing enemy from distance etc. now i look for black shapes in the distance (americas army players will know what im talking about).

It is a situational thing and has no hard and fast rules.

But some general guidelines would be that, at distance when aim is deviation is more likely to make you miss, you should go prone with iron sites, this gives you the least deviation.

If you run around a corner and a guy is there, don't go prone. Going prone in that situation is a horrible idea because then you are a sitting target that can't aim very quickly (although, i have seen some expoloits with dolphin diving which might make this point moot).

It also depends on your weapon matchup. If you have an inaccurate but powerful gun, going prone at distance against a sniper or the L85 is just a bad idea. It's either charge or take cover.

I recently just discovered the beauty of the crouch. It is a good way to quickly get in and out of a fairly accurate position. I find it great for coming around corners, pulling up your iron sites and popping a few guys, especially as assault.

But, it is situational, so don't ever stick to a hard and fast rule, you have to see what works in what situations.

All of these tips make a lot of sense. As for zooming....if someone is about 10 feet away I know there isn't really a point. When you are about 20-30 feet away, do you zoom for those or nay? Of course it's situation specific, but say in karkand you run around a corner of a building. You are on a street and you see a guy 20-30 feet away. What would be the best thing to do? Normally I would prone right there and try to pray I kill him before he kills me. Would it be best to just go crouching around corners to scope it out? Would it be best to run back to the corner and slowly peak out?

20 to 30 feet away try avoiding the spray and pray. Multiple, short bursts, 2-3 rounds from a crouch if possible, will improve your accuracy and kill ratio.

Good advice evilzucchini. I especially agree about the Support soldier. You really need to understand range. Awesome gun but you will usually lose a 1 vs 1 with a soldier having a better ranged weapon.

Depending on the situation, I will usually run towards the opposing player, who is likely already prone and then jump into the prone position while firing. Your heavy armour should protect you unless they are a good shot/have a heavy gun. Otherwise, I get out of dodge!

Close range no prone - agreed!

Prone is vital IMO, assign it to a handy button/key. I use my Spacebar for this position.

                      tfarre,
It isn't zooming (on some guns it is, but on most it is not). What you are doing is putting up gun up and looking through the scope/iron sights or whatever the hell they are called. This decreases the random deviation of your bullets so the shots are more accurate. It also slows down how much you turn when you move the mouse.

The advatange to this is that it is easier to aim at a far away unmoving object. The disadvantage is that if someone is close, it is hard to track them. I tend to go in and out of that "zoomed" mode all of the time because I want to be able to move, but I also like to have the good shots.

Again, it is hard to set a rule for 20 feet away. What are you? Are you assault? Are you medic? Are you a sniper? Are you a support class? For all of these kits, you would react slightly, if not much differently. For an assault class I would probably have my gun on auto charge the guy and, as someone above said, shoot 2-3 shot bursts. For the medic, I might do that or I might crouch and "zoom" and fire. Sniper, I would probably spot and flee or pull out my pistol. Support I would probably drop, zoom and unload 3-5 shot bursts.

All i gotta say is yes go prone but never ever firing while standing upright always do a crouch or prone.

depends on the situation, and the weapon.

Generally speaking, the farther away your opponent, the more value in going prone, and the less added risk.

Yeah all do that, let's have nice big prone fest.
It's ridiculous, when I see someone like some meters away from me around corner they go prone. When I see someone in the distance they go prone.
When I shoot unsuspected enemy they go prone hop prone hop.
All the time prone prone, stupid as hell. With the occasionaly guy that does nothing but hop and tube you to death or spams the shotgun.
When I see someone inches in front of me they go prone at my feet.
Everybody that is camping is proning. Do I need to go on ??? Needless to say is every infantry fight is a prone fest.

                              Re: Going prone & zoom

In my albeit limited experience, I've found that engagements require a variety of tactics and few stedfast rules.

                              Close engagement:
                              Vs. Prone or kneeling opposition:
Its time to strafe, dolphin dive, roll, and firing internmittently. The goal is to face them while diving/rolling to reduce your profile, and strafe while unloading into them. Note: This is a bad idea against support, grenade/assault, or any class using a shotgun. In the case of the support, dolphin dive and find cover. Against the shotgun, try to put some distance between you or fire away. Against grenades your best bet is to sprint and dive around, just remember that the switch from grenade to primary is surprisingly quick, so you don't have much time. (Don't zoom, unless you have a stationary opponent.)
Vs. Strafing, run & gunning, and bunny hoping:
If your opponent is "bunny hoping" at close range, I suggest following suit, and firing in occasional bursts. Or run around a corner and lob a grenade at the hopper. That will force them to use their remaining stamina allowing you to get a few more accurate shots in while they panic.

                              Middle Range:
Now is the time for kneeling and zooming, its usually a better bet at a range of 10 to 20 meters in most cases. Though again, it depends on what you are up against, your health, are you facing multiple opponents, do you have the element of surprise, etc. Just fire in bursts, and never single shot, unless you are just that good (which I am not). Just remember that while zooming, it does cause you to move slower, thus, while it may help you get a shot in, it also allows the same for your opponent.

                              Long Range:
Your best bet is to go prone, and strafe between shots, a little movement is the difference between being sniped in the head and surviving with a serious shoulder injury. Regardless, sometimes, its just best not to engage, if they are prone and ready to take shots at you, its often best not to engage unless you have a nearby medic, are a good shot, or are making an initial dodge maneuver. Also note: charging directly on is almost always a bad idea, zig zagging and intermittently sprinting, then run and gunning is a better bet. And please remember, cover is your friend, unless of course its a tin fence that even small caliber rounds can pierce.

Regardless, the pistols, shotguns, anti-tank automatics, sniper rifles/rocket launchers, and support light machine guns folllow their own unique set of rules. Well thats my 2 cents, take it as you like.

And a little OT sentiment: just remember that rushing compitent snipers tend s to lead to claymore surprises, thus use a grenade or any other explosive. The same is true for mines, a tank round will detonate them. Thus sometimes a good trick is to detonate a mine/mines that an enemy tank is trying maneuver around. Most folks, don't take the time, or know that you can shoot the mines. (FYI: this doesn't work against c4, c4 cannot be detonated by your explosives...) Oh and remember you can go prone and hide under many vehicles, talk about a sweet place to hide in the enemy base, or to get your demolitions kills... c4 from underneath the tank. :-). Or a mine placed inside or on top of any vehicle besides helicopters will cause an immediate explosion when the vehicle is moved. (This is a new addition since 1.02). Have fun.
