Try firing the Essex cannon out into the ocean. Up close you'll notice the bullets hit around the crosshairs, but a few hundred meters out and they'll fall short. The further out you aim the more they drop from the crosshairs.
Since you're firing so many rounds it's very obvious; you can't mistake it for random deviation.
