I always thought that there was a bullet drop because many times i've had my m95, and the crosshair is on someones face and it doesn't count as a hit, so ya nice job

I've been trying to prove bullet drop on all weapons for ages(especially the M95), until I previously saw a test similar to this done a few weeks ago. I was going to recreate it to settle this argument, but I guess you beat me to it lol.

Anyways thanks for finaly showing these guys that there is bullet drop on all weapons, and that just cause "Its not in the guns code" doesnt mean that bullets, like all other things are affected by the games physics engine aka gravity.

Here is my original video for anyone who hasnt yet seen it.

It shows the actual bullet drop with the M95 for engaging targets at 400 meters.

Wow, bravo. This is the most undeniable proof I have seen yet (however, I was convinced long ago that there was bullets were affected by gravity and that there was a travel time).

Wow, you worked alot just for this...

EA has to fix the sniping in BF2..This is like CQB sniping..Plus, that "bullet drop" is very hard to even notice...When I used to play Novalogic Black Hawk Down, u could snipe from 900+ meters...I had seen the bullet proof on all guns, but not sniping, in sniping it hits where I aim, no matter how far...

ive known this since the demo, because i was a sniper once in a round and i saw an enemy sniper lying ontop of the crane my aiming cross was right between his eyes but i couldnt hit him, so i started to thinking am i lagging or what suddenly i was thinking about real life wind etc. so i aimed a little above his head and *DANG* sTonY|NL| [m24] victim

I think the bullet drop is good. It makes you think in reality. I like the realism.

A game without bullet deviation is for sissies who have never used a real rifle.

I wonder if they still have the command in the BF2 engine to either make a projectile completely ignore gravity or for gravity to affect it more. They had something like objecttemplate.gravitymod 0 or something on things, and it essentially would go straight. I would assume this is still there as the grenade launchers, tank shells, etc. have an arc to them. I say they remove the deviation from the sniper rifles and increase the gravity mod so there's more bullet drop than normal, but at least the shots would be semi-predictable. (again, you don't really have a range finder, so you still would have to guess the range and lead your shots, but at least the gun would be accurate then).

Try using server confirmed hits instead of decals/smoke puffs or whatever you call them. In my experience they are totally off. I asked a friend to fire shots over my head with the M24 in an upward angle and the smoke puffs where around my feet. Since I haven't been able to ask DICE programmers about the weapon coding I can't say either way what the hell they are doing but I can say for shure that it's not how Carmack does it. (Quake/Quake2/Quake3/Doom3 etc...)

Physics calculations are usually only applied to objects that really need them in order to make them behave naturally. Adressing physical properties to every moving object in a game WILL have a cost. An M4 pumps out 30 rounds in 3 seconds!!! If you want to do a proper test then you set the deviation of the M24 or M95 to zero, start your own server and fire at a player who is stationary and get server confirmed hits. You also need to make shure that the "bullet" or distance vector leaves from the exact center of the sniper scope.




Some nifty calculations there... 41cm in 200 yards... My friend has a decent sniper rifle and he adjusts his scope between 1 and 2 cm to be accurate at 200 meters.

I'm with Wasp on this one. Your tests don't prove anything. It shows the decals drop that's about it. I still don't know one way or the other but in game shooting doesn't seem affected by bullet drop. Use a real person to aim at aim at them in prone side on so you are shooting them in the bum. Show me 75% of the hits registering as HITS then I will believe there is bullet drop.

At the moment I just don't know or its so so so so so damn small below 500meters that who cares.

From what I've experienced, it appears that bullet drop seems to increase when aiming at a target of higher elevation. Snipers in cranes are a good example of this, as you can never seem to hit them shooting at them with your crosshairs centered, but you can by simply aiming slightly higher. I've also noticed that bullet drop seems to decrease and in some case reverse when shooting downwards.

ie: On a crane shooting a proned soldier in the distance. The bullets actually seem to be landing above him, and by aiming slightly below him, you can get a hit.

I have not yet confirmed this, but it has happened to me several times. But as for bullet drop in general, it is real on all guns.

They are simply applying laws of physics with an adjustment offset to gravity when performing cosines and sines laws.

So the lower your velocity the greater bullet drop is. With your velocity slow enough you can fire vertically and have it hit you.

I am physicist (PhD) and still I am not sure what sines and cosines laws you are talking about. The laws involved in these things are just the simple 2/3-D projectile motion equations which are exactly the same as the 1-D motions laws. very simple sit of equations.

It is actually the more time you fly the more drop you will have. by lowering the velocity you are just increasing the time of flight. make the speed 1m/s and try to shoot a bot 5 meters away! it will take 5 damn seconds to hit him (if you ever hit him!)

I seriously fail to see how this doesn't prove it. If decals are off, they aren't THAT far off. I have never once fired my gun at the horizon only to have the decal appear at my feet.

I don't know why people are so hard headed....if they can code a grenade dropping from a 203, or a hand grenade for that matter, then a bullet drop on sniper rifle is reasonable.

I was under the impression that the horizontal and vertical components of the vectors could be treated as seperate, individual particles. ie. firing something from a height of 0.5m at a speed of 900m/s paralell to the ground will take the same amount of time to hit the ground as it would if it was fired at 1m/s.

Trying to shoot a bot 5 meters away with a bullet travelling at 1m/s will not take 5 seconds to hit him.

Say we are shooting from a height of 0.5m

s = ut + 0.5at²
*0.5 = 0t + 0.5 x 9.8t²
0.5 = 4.9t²
0.10 = t²
root0.10 = t
t = 0.31 seconds.

The bullet would hit the ground in 0.31 seconds.

Sorry, I just had to correct what I believe was a mistake in your assumptions.

I'm probably wrong, I mean I've only done senior high school physics, and you have a PhD.
