Re: Proof of bullet drop in the game

HAH! I knew there was bullet drop in this engine. Thank you for proving it SK.

Lets see what how much the bullet should drop if we apply real world physics.

    M24 velocity = 853 meters per second (from globalsecurity.org)
    M24 bullet mass (7.62 military) = 173 grains = 2699.39 grams

is a nice little tool to figure out bullet drop, so if i plug in standard (no wind at all, normal temp, etc) weather conditions, and shoot the bullet in a perfectly horizontal line the aformentioned data it says that...

at 100 yards, we should have a drop of 5.5 centimeters, 200 yards, a drop of 41.46 centimers. Keep in mind 100 yards is about how far you can see in battlefield 2.

So, play with those numbers and this site SK and see if the engine is doing it right.

Re: Proof of bullet drop in the game

It would be interesting if you could find a set location to test the M24 or M95 from and then show a picture analysis of the following: 1 shot without the cone of fire, to show bullet drop, and then 5 or 6 shots with the cone of fire enabled. Maybe from three rough distances; 100m, 200m, and 300m. Or thereabouts; it would be interesting to see how cone of fire influences the bullet, especially with bullet drop pretty conclusively proven.

Thanks so much for testing and posting your results, by the way. :)

Re: Proof of bullet drop in the game

Try using server confirmed hits instead of decals/smoke puffs or whatever you call them. In my experience they are totally off. I asked a friend to fire shots over my head with the M24 in an upward angle and the smoke puffs where around my feet. Since I haven't been able to ask DICE programmers about the weapon coding I can't say either way what the hell they are doing but I can say for shure that it's not how Carmack does it. (Quake/Quake2/Quake3/Doom3 etc...)

Physics calculations are usually only applied to objects that really need them in order to make them behave naturally. Adressing physical properties to every moving object in a game WILL have a cost. An M4 pumps out 30 rounds in 3 seconds!!! If you want to do a proper test then you set the deviation of the M24 or M95 to zero, start your own server and fire at a player who is stationary and get server confirmed hits. You also need to make shure that the "bullet" or distance vector leaves from the exact center of the sniper scope.

Some nifty calculations there... 41cm in 200 yards... My friend has a decent sniper rifle and he adjusts his scope between 1 and 2 cm to be accurate at 200 meters.

My game must be hacked then, cause I have zipple zero squat bullet drop what-so-ever over whatever distance with whatever weapon...

                Edit: Retracting statement...

Well done SK. Can we now stop calling it bullet drop and instead call it gravity?

@bobcat beacuse the bullets in his game are traveling 100x faster so it isnt noticable

I call MAJOR BS on this one. People start talking out their ass when proved wrong.

ok how did u zoom in that far for one, is that a mod maybe there is something im not getting but that seems a little far to zoom
I believe in bullet drop but that pic seems to far zoomed in

Did you do the code alterations that he did?

And char-ley he said he edited the zoom a bit :|:

why not just throw the shells? LOL.

try playing sniper with a friend on the other team. They go prone, and fire dead on their head from a good distance. It won't hit, then raisse it up a little and headshot.

He changed the zoom of the sniper scope from .2 to .01. That's what changed the zoom of the scope, so you could see the noticable difference.

I doubt it matters. A bullet will hit st before it starts to drop surely? Even for snipers, but it would be a good addition for real experts!! And windage too!!!
