Okay your problem is simple, you're switching to C4 twice instead of once.
Here's how it works:
When you lay a C4 and switch, the switching doesn't happen right away, it takes a second or two to switch over to the detonator.
So what I think you're doing is laying a C4 then switching, now since the switch hasn't happened as fast as you want it to, you then hit the switch again. Now what happens is you're back to a C4 at your foot.

So do this:
Lay a C4, then right away hit the detonator, then wait for the detonator to appear. Wait for it. Don't switch again. And the detonator will be there.

I believe this is your problem.
This used to happen to me, and I corrected it by doing what I wrote above.

Out of all replies, this one caught my attention because it was something I was not sure about.

And I did a lot of testing tonight. And I got to the conclusion that solution is wrong too.

The detonator doesn't necesarily change to c4 by pressing the fire button. It changes on it's own. << read this people cause i don't want to repeat that again.

this is the scenario:

I pressed the button to lay down c4
Switch to detonator
after 1 FULL second without pressing any button it switched back to c4.
So, yeah, it's a ****ing bug.

Sure, if you had the time you can correct it... but who does? I mean, you're a spec ops for god's sake!!

I tested different pings and that had absolutely nothing to do with it. It did it just as randomly.

Im glad Im not the only one getting it.

Its EXTREMELY annoying.

When you need to quickly place C4 on a vehicle when under fire, you have no hope.

I have resorted to the tactic of actually emptying all my packs bar one or two, so that when you click, it cannot go back to a pack.

But, in saying that, I have also thrown down six packs on occasion.

I pretty sure it's server lag. Nothing to do with you re connection speed. Same as the scope/sight zooming issue and it's bloody annoying.

If you've experienced this on single player then C4 really is screwed.

it has happend to me also. I can place the C4 then run and hide with the detonator and wait for someone to come. then i click and BOOM! I die cuz i it thorws a C4 on my feets!! HATE IT!

Its so anoying 4 me when I place a c4 on a enemyvehicle and try to detonate it...argh!! you get the next c4 in youre hand by then the enemy already spotted you on youre dead.
A other bug for me is when I put c4 on my buggy I sometime see a 6th..
wich I cant use right click again will get me the detonator.
Yes life of a spec ops is hard.

The detonator should be on another key, so you can hold your gun and still detonate at the same time.

Middle mouse button, or like someone said just using the right mouse button to detonate rather than switch could work.
