FPS Mentality

No matter how much a game stresses "team play", the majority of people playing have the "FPS" mentality; i.e. I am Rambo and I don't need no stinking squad.

I blame stats. Team stats aren't nearly as important (to most) as kill/death ratio, kill streaks, combat score, etc.....

Yes, I realize I'm generalizing and there are a lot of you out there who crave (like me) playing on a server where teamwork is the rule, not the exception.

But the majority of the players are still playing Quake. They want to take on the the whole army by themselves with the most devastating weapon they can get. Who cares what the TEAM needs, they only care about kills.

Gee great Rambo, your team lost, but you got 50 kills

Ever look at the top players' team scores? Not very impressive. It's like a 7-1 ratio of combat score to team score.

If my team score isn't at least equal or higher than my combat score, I feel like I haven't done my job. Hell, I'm a medic, my team score should be at least double my combat score.

If you're willing to punish for a TK, but not willing to SUPPORT your teammates when they need it, you should be playing some FPS game and not this one.

Don't get teamwork points for killing the tank thats mowing down my team mates or stoping the enemy squads assault on the flag. (Unless they're ON the flag.) So I'd say that judging teamwork based on teamwork points isnt really a valid point when people play combat kits.

Well said couldnt agree more, its the same as with the guys I see all the time standing there waiting for there Heli/Jet/Tank to spawn only to hop in and drive/fly away while the flag their at is being captured, drives me nuts.

You have a very valid point. Everybody has a role and the teamwork score doesn't always reflect the individuals role in team success.

However, when you see teams of 16 and no medics or engies, there is something wrong.....

When see I posts like "what's your kill streak?" or "Do you TK for vehicles?"....there is something wrong.

I'm just saying the emphasis is on individual stats rather than team play....and I blame the stat system.

i always play as the sniper and at first i could care less about teamwork. but the more i got into the more i saw that teamwork will greatly help out the sniper. im all for teamwork i just wish everyone else was. nothing more gratifying than having your squad pinned down by a chopper only to snipe the pilot and watch the copter fall to the ground. ive only hit the pilot twice but damn it was sweet. and my team didnt seem to mind either.

There's no point in try for "teamwork" if you're pubbing with random people. It'd be nice, but it isn't realistic. That's why I prefer to pub when my clanmates are on. Other than that, when it's just me in a pub, what am I gonna do? Tell people to work together? It's just not realistic. In most pubs you're lucky if you don't see people throwing profanity at eachother.

I agree, while working as a team is fun, will get things done more easily and is more gratifying, if you play lonewolf and kill a lot of baddies or blow up assets you *are* helping your side win. I have switched to joining squads now that i have played for a while but on pubs teamwork is the exception. But, in the end, everyone really is free to choose whether they want to play lone wolf or join a squad.

I think there's a reason for that. First, I'm pretty sure tks go to your teamscore. Second, things like reviving, though I can't see why they are less useful than killing, get half the points.

Killing people only helps your team for 15 seconds. (going by most servers) But anyway...I agree. Most people only care about their k/d ration...and could care less about the team or winning. You can mix kills into teamwork more, such as taking out a tank for a pinned squad while in a plane, or other things of that sort.

I don't give a phuck about k/d look at my stats I have 200+ more deaths then kills because I "play rambo" I dive into firefights with my light machine gun and take care of the squad owning my squad or cap a flag. I hate it when I join a puzzy squad that always tell me to back off the firefights or not to go in there.
I enjoy killing people and getting killed, I dont hide with a damn health pack the whole round or try to snipe the enemy the closese I am the better it feels but I hate when I'm out of ammo and I have a gun pointed at me:cry: ( I turned off outo reload)

I agree with you taco regarding the fps mentality.

I play the teamwork side all the time. I love a good squad that works together and communicates.

I guess I'm the exception as the top ten goes.

I'm number one in teamwork baby. ...from blackhawking mostly but thats teamwork.

I am always pilot/leader in that thing and my stats show it. My stats show a horrible k/d ratio so I'm the antithesis of the "rambo".

My stats aren't too different really, my K ratio is bad and I usually go for team points when playing unless it's a big map and vehicle combat rules.

Suggest you join a clan, that's the only satisfaction you may have if you crave that all important teamwork. You'll get good squads and commanders now and then, but it's definitely the minority rather than the majority. But you know this already.

Some people may be good FPS players, but are they good BF2 players? That's like night and day.

When I crave good teamwork I login to EQ2 and raid stuff with my guild. You don't win if you don't have good teamwork. MMPoRGs are nice sometimes, the grunt mentality is more absent and you have to think more through encounters to win.:)

Yeah, you have to team up... if you get 6 guys together with 2 medics, AT, support, ops, and assault, you can OWN a map. Medics revive, support for AT as well as the killer PKM, ops plays AT (C4) and sniper (G36C), and assault for.. well... assaulting people.

Get a squad like that with perhaps an armored division from another squad with engineers and tanks, and the map is yours.

We did that in Karkland and a few other maps, and the score was always 100+ to 0 by the end. I think I needed to respawn maybe twice.
