How stupid do you have to be to turn off a firewall so that a game would run 'smoother' as it 99.999% certain isn't the culprit anyways ?

Like the guy above me said it is the cause of a lot of connection problems that people have and as well as that it says it in the manual.

I have read of countless people on these forums that have said they turned off their firewalls and now they have no problems with conections dropping. Next time try to think before you dribble crap onto these forums

It is the server. I have encountered this many times, even when on TS with my buds and it happens to them at same time. I have encountered that admins change maps, if they are losing. Do not be surprised. Can be other issues as well with the server.

So he is a dumbass too that don't seem to know anything about the way firewalls work (or don't as the case may be). And based on the comment about "then portforward a load of ports", he can't even read well...

Really? Hmm, either you have a manual that is BADLY translated or manuals in EU (mine is a 20 page pamphlet) are different from manuals in Australia or you have problems reading or understanding what you have read.

I mean, please show me the place in the manual where it tells you to shutdown your firewall??

In the troubleshooting help files they *do* suggest you try to disable your firewall if you have connection problems to see if that works and then recommend that you configure your firewall so that the needed ports are open. EA does not suggest anything like this at their support site, so someone there has brains...

Hmm, funny, I did a search with "firewall" and most of the messages I saw (went back only 4 weeks) were the likes of "turned off my firewall and it didn't help". There was some talk about McAfee causing problems, but there were many who had it and did not have problems. And anyway the problem was more likely the anti-virus part, not the firewall.

So, for the record, ANYBODY WHO RECOMMENDS SHUTTING DOWN THE FIREWALL TO PLAY IS A DUMBASS! No wonder world is full of "zombie pcs" sending forth the tidal wave of spam, it's morons like these... I'm sure your machine is one of the many that keep on banging on my firewall...sheesh...

I get this problem constantly as well . . . I have assumed it was my crappy internet connection (DSL, but extremely slow and unreliable), but perhaps there is something more to it. Some people mention firewalls. I'm currently using Sygate personal firewall. Anyone found a software firewall that works well with this game?

This happens because you're using it over wireless. After much trouble I learned from Belkin (and other mates working for different wireless hardware makers) that wireless simply can't keep up with the info the game needs, especially through a wall when signal strength is lowered.

If you sat the router next to the wireless card it'd probably be OK. But then there's not much point in using wireless.

Buy a big cable :)

I get the same prob occasionally and still haven't figured out what causes it

with countless variations of systems then some will no doubt react totally differently than expected from similar machines.

i for one had to turn off my firewall/background programs to install the 1.03 patch while others had no problems at all. (example: i gave my bro all the same backgraound programs that i have, keeps him safe on the net yet he did not have the problems that i had when installing the patch.

again all computers with their infinite number of variables will not give the same performance (hell look at basic electronics and you will find that you just cant get total precision, you can get damn close but never precise, an excellent example of this is resistors which is why they have silver/gold tolerance bands +/- 5%/10% )

so if its not a problem for you then it may be a problem for someone else and flaming people does not help your argument either!.

think i'd need atleast 10m of cable, what about signal degredation at that distance (3m is ok but upto 10m wouldnt that require signal amplification to limit signal degredation, which also has its problems as you will also be amplifying any residual noise that is produced in the cable)

my field is not communications so im limited in that respect, anybody have any input on this? as i maybe completely off the mark.

Firewalls

Instead of turning your firewall off, go into the options and make it be nice to BF2 - many firewalls, if they don't like a program will alert you as to what is happening and why anyway.

If you have managed to connect to a server and have been playing before this happens, then it really isn't likely to be your firewall - unless it's staving off an attack at the time.

Turning your firewall off begs the question; Why have one at all, if you turn it off when you need it?
