Wake Island Sniping Locations Guide (With Pics) - Snipers must read!

    PART 1:

OK folks, after playing around in Wake ever since the patch was released, I have noticed the same thing regarding sniper locations - they are all very predictable! It's either under or bush, near the downed zeros, or just plain out in the open! This is NOT the way to snipe on Wake, there are far better, less visible and less obvious locations!

See those white WW2 style bunkers? There are three of them on the map, and they make great sniper nests, but with a twist - you don't snipe from the inside of the bunker, you snipe from the TOP. I will get to the reasons why in a sec, but first things first... getting to the top in the first place!

The first step is to get a buggy and park it next to the bunker. Secondly, jump on top of the buggy. Thirdly, jump from the buggy to the top of the bunker. Easy.

Edit - it seems you can actually jump directly on to the bunker without a buggy. Someone on another forum pointed out:

"you do a short, sprint, jump and duck (bring your legs up). do it to the pipe on the side of the huts. it definatly works on 2 of em, cos ive done it. aint tryed the third, but the ground next to one i tryed was flat and level so it ought to be fine.

just tryed the third (the one at the north corner flag) and its do-able too, but requires a jump-prone not a duck. did the other 2 to check too, all do-able."

OK, now we get to the fun part, the sniping. :) The screenshots above are from the bunker at the airfield, it is great for defending the main Chinese base if the south Beach flag has been taken.

You have 2 options once on top of the bunker, the shallow 'hole' on the left or the pink metal objects on the right. I personally prefer the metal objects, as they provide more cover, plus you can be prone while shooting, which means better accuracy. From the hole, you have to be crouched to see over, and your head is also fully exposed, which means an easy HS for the enemy snipers. You do get a better view though, but what good is a view if your gonna get capped in the head? :p

Either way, I'll post screenshots of both, so you can decide for yourself.

    From the 'hole': (NOT recommended!)

Behind the metal objects: (You can move around and back and forth to adjust your viewing angles)

The view from an enemy, looking towards the bunker: (unscoped, iron sights, and sniper scoped)

See the immsense advantage you have over the enemy snipers? Even if you are spotted (and I've never been spotted in this position, so therefore I haven't died yet, the spot is that good!) if he has to kill you, he has to land a shot through that tiny hole in his scope, while you can see his entire body. With iron sights you can forget about being shot, you are pretty much INVISIBLE to iron sights, and you can't shoot what you can't see, right? Plus what non sniper gun can go through THAT tiny hole at 150m - 200m range?

I will also show the views from the other 2 bunkers:
South Beach bunker, looking torwards the South Base flag:

North Base bunker, looking towards the flag and road:

Now, I am NOT claiming you are invincible from these locations, you are still vunerable to artillery, jets, choppers and flanking enemys. What you are 99% safe from is small arms fire from directly in front of you.

I hope the first part of this guide has been helpful for you, do let me know how you fare sniping from these locations. :)

Part 2 coming up soon, stay tuned. :)

    PART 2:
    Boat Cruise... errr
See that boat in the middle of the bay? It's good for a relaxing day of fishing... or sniping!

Grab the transport chopper and head for it, you have to be a moderately skilled pilot to pull this off though, and the landing is all in the timing... practice a few times on an empty server first, or create your own and do it there...

Slow to almost a hover as you approach the boat, and aim for that left mast. When you are almost next to it, jump out of the chopper and parachute down. With practice you will land on the boat every time.

Now to the marvelous panoramic views - you can see the entire bay from here, did you bring a camera along?

So what are the advantages of sniping from the boat?

    1) You can snipe people from a totally unsuspected position. NO ONE looks out at the boat. I have NOT died while sniping from this position, as of yet.

    2) You can cover teammates from flanks by people trying to go around the beach and not the main road.

    3) You can pick off those pesky spec ops guys trying to blow up the arty way before they even get close.

    4) Sure, you can be picked up by satellite, but who doesn't? Plus, enemy commanders will think you are some pilot who bailed in the middle of the bay, and they never bother to arty only 1 person... so you're pretty much safe from arty I'd say...

This position is much more effective when the southern bases have been taken, as it's much closer than the northern bases. Sniping at 400m range in BF2 is based on pure luck at best, you can have your crosshair perfectly still on a stationary target and have your shot miss, especially with the M95. The M24 is better, but it's still pretty random at such ranges.

Mind you, I HAVE hit people at the northern bases, just very sporadically. Perhaps 1 in 5 shots or something... kinda a waste of ammo if you ask me. It's good for picking off people COMING from the northern bases towards the airfield though.

So that concludes my guide. Happy sniping guys, and stay hidden. :)

PS. The boat is also a good place to play AT, tanks are too busy looking at the mainland to notice a rocket coming from the sea, and if you are shooting at chopper, make sure they are OVER you or PAST you before firing, or you will give away your position.

Just be sure to call for a supply drop when you are low on rockets. Or get a support to spawn on you and throw a few ammo packs on the deck, let him swim away though as it gets a bit boring on the boat with an inaccurate support gun.

Thanks you for pointing out all these nice sniper locations. I'm not a sniper, but this should make it very easy for me to spot them in a few seconds! Thanks man!

Heh, I doubt you will find many people there, I've played Wake for around 10 hours since the patch has been out and I've been the only one sniping in those locations every time.

But hey, you don't even really need a sniper rifle from some of those spots, plus the boat is also a good spot for AT, just make sure you call for a supply drop. :)

yes! quickly! replace the entire post with "There is nothing to see here, move along."

nice post, WAke Island is my fave map for sniping. I've always wanted to use the boat in the bay (there is one on Zatar too) but the choppers are always in use by hoggers.

Man, how do you find the spots in the first place?

                      Great places though.

Thanks for the comments guys, let us know how you fare from those spots! From my experience you won't rack up a HUGE amount of kills but depending on the hotspots of that round you can easily get a 10:0 or better score, plus numerous kill damage assists... I am often the only person to not die once in a round, especially when I'm in the boat. It's great when the southern bases have been taken and there is a shootout near the airfield - just pick a stationary target and aim for the head. :)

However, if the Chinese are dominating the round and the US can't take many flags then the boat can get boring real quick... but I guess you can always jump off and swim to shore.

Quite easy actually, I just hopped in the chopper and flew around the map, the first thing I noticed was the boat, and I thought, hmmm, I bet not many people would suspect me sniping from there!

Then I flew around some more and thought, hey, how about the top of the bunkers? Just as well, I found out those pink metal things give you excellent cover/concealment while providing a good view to shoot at the enemy - you have their entire body to shoot at, while they have to nail you through a tiny gap, that's if you've been spotted, and even till now I have not been spotted by anyone while at the airfield bunkers. The other 2 bunkers are a bit more dangerous as you can be flanked quite easily, plus they seem to get artied a bit more...

My favourite spot is still the boat though, it's funny shooting at people and they have absolutely no idea where they are being shot from and start jumping up and down for a few seconds. I just wait for them to calm down a bit and then take a 2nd shot - that's if my first shot wasn't a headshot of course.

Thanks for some of those positions.

Before you posted that spot on the boat, I was playing on Wake Island when the patch first came out, and I swam over to the boat hoping to get onto the boat and snipe, but you can't get onto the boat without jumping out of a helicopter/jet and no doubt taking a boat up to it.
