How To Manually Edit Your Prefix

I know it's been stated before, but it was always as a reply to a thread, which will be rarely seen by those who need it most. Therefore, here is a thread dedicated to teaching you how to manually edit your prefix.

First of all, you're probably asking yourself why you would want to do this. The answer is quite obvious when you think about it. One reason is because your prefix contains illegal characters that the text box won't accept (Something like - < > { } \ / | , .). Second, the prefix box does not use escaped charaters, so if you set your prefix to use certain characters, the prefix will be 'stuck', and the only way to remove it is to manually edit it.

Let's begin.

1. Open up Windows Explorer, your Terminal, or whatever file browser you may be using.
2. Navigate over to your "My Documents" folder (Default: C:\Documents and Settings\YOURNAME\My Documents\).
3. Navigate into \Battlefield 2\Profiles\.
4. Open up Global.con using any text editor (Notepad will do).
5. There should be a line that contains the GlobalSettings.setNamePrefix command. Usually, this will be the second line in the file.
6. Whatever is in between the two double quotes following this command will be your prefix. Edit it to your desire. (Example: GlobalSettings.setNamePrefix "-{SF}-")
7. Save the file (File -> Save), and exit out of your text editor.
8. That's it, you're done! The next time you login to BF2, you should now have the correct prefix. Note that if the changes are made while BF2 is open, it will NOT work. You must have BF2 closed.

will this screw up your points accumulation when the server sends its snaps??? i just wanna make sure this isn't like making a new name.

The server does not look at your prefix at all for points, ranks, or anything. Your prefix is just a text string that is appended to the beginning of your game tag whilst in-game for display purposes only.

There's no reason to back it up. The only thing you can really do to screw things up is if you remove one of the double quotes, which is easily found and fixed.

No, this will not wipe your stats, change your name, or make you headshot everyone automatically.

Is it possible to have more than 6 charcters in the prefix?

(I would usually try before i post but my computer is under "repair"...)

I'm pretty sure the limit is 5 when using the text box in the client. Through editting the file, you should theoretically be able to set your prefix to more than 5, though I would assume that when the game starts, it would clip it after the 5th.

Might be worth testing though.

Cekken, you obviously editted another line, other than setNamePrefix. I recommend uploading a backup of the file (you did remember to make one, no?).
