      Re: CTD after 1.03

For those with the dreaded post splash-screen CTD. Finally got it to work!

It's a bit cumbersome if you only got 1 PC, but this is the only way I could get past the post splash-screen CTD. I got the tips from the Planet Battlefield Forum by a user called remedy_. Here goes:

      1. Installed BF2 and patched it directly to 1.03. No surprise, the post splash-screen CTD occured.

      2. Installed BF2 on ANOTHER PC and patched this to 1.03 for testing that the patch I've downloaded actually would work. And it worked flawlessly. I got the "invalid cd-key error", but that was not my concern at the moment.

      3. Then I copied the whole "program files\battlefield 2" directory from that PC to my own PC. Voila! It worked! 20 hours of agony paid off :)

      4. Still had the "invalid CD-key issue". This was solved by using the BFCDKeyCheck.exe workaround mentioned here: http://www.totalbf2.com/forums/showt...t=33813&page=2 by Gunny. Thank you Gunny!

Well, hope this can help some of you strugglers out there. Too bad if you haven't got a second PC. Try to find a friend with a PC and DVD-burner

        Solution (for me at least)!

Ok...finally I got it! I had the "patch failed" and "CD-key invalid". Here's what I did...step by step, not leaving anything out, no matter how trivial. Some of the steps are, well, maybe just a result of some vague hunch, and some might just be a habit (like exiting programs, restarting etc). Don't know which step fixed it but it now works (I think, though, that the problem might be the display drivers). First of all, here are my specs:

        AMD Athlon 64 3500+
        Corsair 2GB PC 3200 RAM
        MSI Neo2 Platinum motherboard
ATI X800Pro (using Catalyst 5.9 and it's Catalyst Control Center)
        Samsung SyncMaster 710T
        Creative Audigy 2ZS
        Windows XP SP1

        1) Uninstalled BF2 according to this: http://support.ea.com/cgi-bin/ea.cfg...ted=1119312427

        2) Searched the registry for "battlefield" and deleted all keys associated with Battlefield 2. Then I deleted the C:\Documents and Settings\"My Name"\My Documents\Battlefield 2 folder.

        3) Uninstalled "Catalyst Control Center" through the "Add/remove programs", then reboot.

        4) Unistalled "ATI Display Drivers" and "ATI unistall tool" through "Add/remove Programs", then reboot

        5) When prompted to install display drivers on reboot, I clicked "Cancel".

        6) Installed the latest Display Drivers and CCC through the bundled driver file from ATI.com, then reboot.

        7) Put my BF2 DVD in my second DVD drive (previously installed from a different drive).

        8) Exited some programs running in the background (Skype, Popup blocker, ATITool, SpeedFan)

        9) Installed Battlefield 2 on default directory (C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2) Previously I had it on F:\Battlefield 2.

        10) Started the game, retrieved my account, truned EAX off, turned resolution to 1280x9?? at 60MHz refreshrate. Turned the three graphicssettings on the bottom of the screen to medium, everything else on high, then AA to x4.

        11) Exited and restarted the game

        12) Renamed the patchfile

        13) Tried to run the patch the regular way - "patching failed".

        14) Ran the patch and chose language, the went to the %temp% folder.

        15) Opened the cmd window and ran the patch from there (By drag&drop + destination folder).

        16) Clicked "cancel" in the patch window and then "finished".

        17) Entered game...it started up!!

        18) Changed the resolution to 1280x1024 at 60MHz. Then exited game.

        19) Started the patch again, chose language, then into %temp% again.

        20) Ran the CDkeyCheck.exe (or whatever the file is called).

        21) Entered game once again.

        22) Joined a server...optimizing shaders...long time...got in...just to be booted because of "There is a problem with your connection".

        23) Exited BF2

        24) Downloaded pbweb.exe, put it into my Battlefield 2\pb folder, then ran the file...long wait while punkbuster updates.

        25) Deleted the Cache-files in C:\Documents and settings\"my name"\My Documents\Battlefield 2\mods\bf2\cache

        26) Then everything worked like a dream!!

If any of you out there also have success doing these steps, please post it in the thread.

            Re: CTD after 1.03

            FYI...

After trying everything said here on this forum to keep BF2 from CTDing, I decided (out of boredom) to upgrade my video drivers to the ForceWare 81.82.

Seems that solved my problem. BF2 works again.

I would suggest everyone trying to eithe upgrade or reinstall their existing video drivers. Can't hurt.

              @Fokkifokki

I followed these steps you have made except for the part with catalyst because i already had the newest drivers, which ATI controllcenter though. Now the game is working perfectly. I urge everyone to try this out, could be our saviour

                  Re: CTD after 1.03

                  SIMPLER SOLUTION:

After 2 days of banging my head against the computer i found my solution to the problem... so simple it hurts.

Just install the patch normally and let it fail... press finish.

Then run it again and copy the TEMP files at my documents/etc... to the game directory and run it. It should work now, worked for me.

The failed install adds 2 files missing, which is RENDDX9.DLL and RENDDX9x2.dll i think, just check if you have those files.

                    Re: CTD after 1.03

Im having the same problem with CTD'ing. Ive uninstalled/reinstalled cleaned Registry re patched straight to 1.03 and still the same. Tried latest drivers too and still f**k all.

I cant believe how shoddily made this game is. Maybe the 10th patch will bring it up to at least half the quality as an ID/Epic game.

                    Screw BF2 for now.

                      Still nothing. Ive tried:

                      Uninstalling/cleaning (inc Reg) /reinstalling
                      Updating PB
                      Patching to 1.03
                      Deleting Profiles Directory
                      Updating to Nvidia 78.01 drivers
                      '' '' 81.xx Beta drivers.

Sound, Chipset, DX9 and XP is fully updated.

What next????? Ive tried this twice now.

                          Re: CTD after 1.03

Take a look at what Bravus wrote and the what I wrote. We both tried to let the patch install the normal way (and getting the "patching failed), then afterwards we installed it manually.

Did anybody else do this with success?
