If friendly mines didn't go off, would more people play Engineer?

In many situations having an Engineer lay AT mines can really stop an entire enemy convoy in its tracks.

Flags like the SE flag next to the USMC base on the 32-player map of Fushe Pass and the narrow roads on Songhua Stalemate at each side's main base are GREAT spots for Engineers to lay mines and stop the enemy advance (I love putting mines at the top of the hill on the southern road out of the USMC's main base - vehicles get stuck moving up the hill if they stop their forward momentum).

So my question is if friendly mines did not go off would that make this arcade sim more fun???

Would that mean every base you enter you would have to worry about enemy mines?

Is someone making a mini-mod for this?

    Yes!
TK server kicking for this issue is so stupid!

My problem isn't about them going off -- its about the idiots who don't realize to NOT DRIVE AROUND AIMLESSLY when they see the Skull & Crossbones icon come up. I don't think I should lose 8 POINTS to some goof who can't use his eyes to spot a mine or realize what the red skull icon means (would be nice if mines / claymores showed up on radar to friendlies). IMO mines should be a lower point loss.

Mines are INVALUABLE when used on teams where they won't be wasted on teammates. On maps like Karkland, if you have Spec Ops take out the MEC bridge and an Engineer place mines near the ramps that exit out of the water (put the mines in the water) -- you can stop so many advances from people trying to steal the tank / take out artillery & uav.

I like to employ tactics like booby-trap commonly used vehicles (this way my team doesn't get raped by a tank) -- but there's always the chance of a teammate not paying attention, then punishing me for it.

definately yes. But i think mines would be quite lame if you could just place them anywhere without thoughts, because tk damage is off.

Friendly units shouldn't even set off mines.

I'd play engineer ALL THE TIME if I didn't have to worry about teamates driving over mines.

I've layed mines in a pub server TWICE. Both times I ended up with like -20 after a few stacked hummers drove over my mines... giving me massive TK's AND TK punishes... getting me banned from the server.

You have to have your head examined if you lay mines in a pub server.

I have only played engy a couple of times, each time it ended in TK's. I placed the mines responsibly with a route for friendlies to go around. But that wasn't enough for the blind and the stupid. I heard that the there will be a guide dog unlock in the new patch.

If they took away the TK aspect then yes I would play engy more.

That would take away from the realism of war mines dont care who layed them down they only have one job and thats to blow up when there triped and they dont care who trips them. So if anyone could just throw mines around all day with no worry of taking out there team mates then things would just be blowing up everwhere and would ruin the game. well thats my two cents

I think it comes down to three issues...
                1. People not paying attention.
                2. People not playing with the 3D map on.
                3. No difference between a claymore, c4, and mine icon.

you really must take into consider friendly vehicle movement when placing mines anywhere.

At first all I did was waste mines on TKs, but I was determined to make use of them.

I have over 800 TKs  , the majority of them from mines

Its a tough learning curve, each map has its Dos and Donts.

I would rather that the mines kill friendlies, that way it takes more skill to use them correctly. This aint no NoobTube class, lets not make it such.

I think it boils down to every third player is a 14 year old kid with a typical 14 year old kid's mentality. Dont get the chopper? Shoot at it with your gun or rocket! Run over a mine after you got told 5 times to watch for mines on the bridge and go the other way out? Punish the eng!

It's just absurd. Mines are the single best defensive weapon in the whole game and you cant use the damn things.

If mines didn't go off for friendlies, every road would be covered in them.
Its the dumbass people who chose to drive over them (despite the warnings) that are the problem.

Maybe if a friendly mine counted as 1 tk and not whoever was in the vehicle that would be better.
I still wouldn't play engineer, the gun is too useless. If they could have some other advantage other than the mines.
The repair thing is kinda useless too, no-one ever waits to be repaired anyway. The vehicle respawns should be a bit longer as well.
That would make me play engineer more.

As an "idiot" who drives around with the 3d map on, maybe you can help me out with this. The red skull icon in front of my tank tells me that it's a mine, c4, or a claymore? Oh, right they all use the same icon....

I play engineer all the time & I'm always nearby any mines that I've laid. If I see a teammate heading towards one, I make every effort to stop them in time. I always make sure to leave a clear & navigable path. Tossing mines randomly is irresponsible, though I do agree it would be nice to lose less points for killing a friendly with a mine.

A very effective tactic, for sure.

Take responsibility for your own actions. You laid the mine. There's no reason for me to believe that a vehicle in my own base would be deadly. Often times, people jump into the 1st vehicle they can when they see an approaching APC or tank.

True the USMC Eng gun is allmost useless i mean come on a pump shotgun when you got people runing around with full auto AK's you get one shot off a least then its lights out the MEC Eng kit isnt that bad just runs out of rounds quick but it can match the AK. Also the wrench is just about as useless to its good in the BH and for fixing the art and crap like that but on the field its dumb

BINGO!! When I play Engineer anymore it's because the Assets need repairing or I decide to use a vehicle. I play Support mostly. When I do play Engi, I hardly even drop mines anymore (because of the blind idiots). I only drop them when I see a tank on a UAV scan coming my way or see one rolling up. I do LOVE playing Engi like Spec ops though. Sneak up on one that is looking the other derection & run up,, toss one UP on the vehicle or in it. Even if I get killed, the second they roll forward or backward.... BOOM! Alot of times I have gotten away w/o dying.
