As my screenname implies, my emphasis in-game and in RL is on long-range precision shooting. Some time ago I posted a guide on how to get the most out of the sniper kits. Since then, I've discovered the same thing many others have... EA/Dice F'd up the sniper kits on purpose rendering them unrealistic at best, and worthless in untrained hands at worst.
So here is my new perspective on sniping:
Do not choose the Sniper kit.
Yes, I said it. The sniper kits are NOT the best kits to use for picking off targets from concealed/covered locations. I mostly use the medic kit these days. The M16A1, in single fire, using ironsignts has LESS deviation than any of the "Sniper rifles" in the game. It takes an average of four shots to get a kill, but generally this is easy. After the first shot your target runs in circles, trying to find who's shooting at them, looking for an enemy within 20 at ground level instead of a 'sniper' position. That's "On Average." A head-shot is a headshot, and with practice you can drop enemies fast.
In busy maps like Karkland, most people are running around with some damage anyway so it's easy to finish them off, giving someone else a damage kill assist. Remember, SLOW fire. Be sure your M16 is on semi-auto, fire one round, let the reticle reset, then fire again.
Killed a score of people and run out of ammo as this nighe invincible new generation of sniper? No problem. It's pistol time.
AGAIN, to my shock and disgust, ALL game pistols have less deviation than the game's "Sniper Rifles." If your target is standing, imagine he is sitting on your front sight. If you just hide his hips with the front sight you'll hit center mass. Also, for some STUPID reason, the pistol's reticle resets really, really fast. Once you have a target acquired, fire off at least six rounds as fast as you can. Watch for the yellow X. If you see the whole target clearly and get no X's, you're probably shooting too low. If you're losing the target behind the front-sight and get no X's, you're shooting high. Adjust as you continue to fire and you'll wipe them out.
Another bonus of this idea is that you have the assets of your other chosen kit (preferably either Medic or Spec Ops). Medics can lay medipacs around their roost and heal themselves, or act as a sniper/spotter team. Spec Ops can put themselves in EXTREMELY hot roosts and use the suppressed pistol to slay the enemy without mercy and they'll be baffled as to where the fire is coming from. Not to mention being able to lay C4 and baby sit it, picking off a few enemies and biding ones' time until enough enemy rush the flag for a 'juicy' C4 kill.
In short, I'm a marksman at heart, but I'm laying my M24 and 95M asside. EA did 'em wrong.... raped the poor things. The mark of a real sniper is adaptability and in BF2, sniping is best done without the sniper kit.
