not to bring up a diff game but in joint ops the commander did spot targets,it would bring up a spot for the gunner to hit.he still had to dial in range.and i dont remember what driver other than drive,oh and the commander was the gunner on top they really need the duck option.

3 guys in a tank.. they tried that in a mod but it never worked.

I did try it, and the times I did we never hit a thing, the driver would change directions allways at the critical moments, the gunner would try desperately to grow psychic powers to read the driver's mind, and the crew would get cut to pieces by a single player tank, even if the sp had only 1/3rd of our firepower/armour. The only times it would work was when you took one alone, drove up to a spot, and switched seats to the main gun..

irl tankers get trained to work as a team. online gamers usually can't be bothered. Maybe a clan can get the teamwork required to operate one efficiently but they will be rare..

DC had the M109, and while it was only a 2 person crew, it did involve the driver/gunner aspect. I can't begin to tell you how many times a driver would head off in one, and tell the gunner to "get out, its my artillery". Even then the idea of the 2 guys working as a team wasn't there...

This thing was rendered useless unless a clan was messing with it...

It works fine in Planetside. That game has been around forever, and is still going strong.

BF isn't OFP. It wouldn't work very well, think of the posibilities, because if you're gunning, the driver can bail. If you're driving, the gunner can bail. If you're trying to aim the gun, the driver can decide to go ape**** and drive like a fool, if you need cover the clown could sit there in the line of fire for the hell of it. Sometimes I pop out from around a corner, fire, reverse and wait for the reload and pop out and fire again, imagine how that wouldn't work if someone's driving for you.

The idea of a three person tank crew is good and I believe in it. But it was tried in JO/Joe and to tell you the truth most times, unless you were lucky, you never saw more than two in a tank. Communications is a key factor. And I do not mean typing a message. In AGE, my clan, we use VEntrillo and when I manned a tank as a driver I always gave control/command to the gunner. He told me where to go and when to stop or go forward or back up. The way it's meant to be. But this requires quite a bit of team work even past squad level. It actually takes some practice by interested parties. But I'd vote for it.

in the Mercenaries mod they have it so that two foot soldiers can ride on the back of the tank

It would never work except in a clan-type situation. Not to mention half your team would be manning tanks.

Re: What if a Tank had a 3 person crew?

I personally think that Planetside did prove that it does work. Of the 3 faction only one actually has a main tank where the driver can fire a gun, and it isnt even a turret nor very powerful.

Thus the driver really only drives. The learning curve on how to place your shot with a moving tank is difficult sure, but you can get the hang of it. It is especially difficult since tank shells on 2 of the 3 Main Tanks actually lobe their shots, unlike in this game were shells have very little arc.

So forcing 3 man gun crews isnt all that bad of an idea. The TR reference with players leaving with only 1 gunner instead of 2. Well consider that people most leave NOW with the machine gunner position uncrewed.

I think with the power that the tank brings to the battle field, it should require 3 people.

Since EA decided the only way to fix BH-Wh0ring was to completely screw up all the other vehicles in the game, how would this work exactly?

You have 2-3 people playing in a Tank team together getting to a flag, all but 1 jump out to cap that point (quickest and for points). The remaining member is in the gunner position to cover you. Then the moment you cap the JackA$$ of the game spawns there, ignores everyone around him, and jumps in the tank and takes off with your gunner. He doesn't care if that was your ride, cos it's not yours anymore. He doesn't give one flip to give a ride to anyone else, he's got a date to keep with death all by himself, thats why he is the JackA$$ of the game.

Happens to me all the time playing on pubs with teammates using transport. What makes you think it would happen any different when JackA$$ spawns and there is a nice shiny tank there for him to gank away from everyone else and drive off to his, and possibly your gunners death?

While it sounds nice to have one player focused on their own gun, if no one gets in, you are going to be a lot less effective that you currently are now and be way more disappointed.
Wrong. The TR tank only requires two people to man it effectively, since the third player just controls the mounted MG on the top. Same for BF. Having two people operate a tank isn't far-fetched at all, but I do think that tanks should be more durable and more rare.

Two-man tanks worked just fine in Tribes 2.

A buddy and I spent many hours as a very proficient tank crew. He was the gunner and I was the driver. The only kills I got were from running over people.

Of course, we used BattleCom to coordinate.

I don't know any reason why Tribes 2 players would be more capable of handling this than BF2 players.

Sorry Iceman, but I had to laugh when I read that. I'd be suprised if most armor lasted more than 45 seconds on pretty much any map it was being used on. Sure, there are the tank whores that wrack up 50 kills, but the majority of guys get taken out rather quickly between the C4, TOWs, SRAWs, and grenades.

Tanks would have to have much more realistic armor values to justify a 3-man crew -- don't get me wrong, I'd love to see it as it would probalby double my kill numbers.

2/3-man crews are a good idea -- they worked for us in PlanetSide and kept all the noobies out of the armor.

However it would take more teamwork (which is what BF2 should be about) than the lone armor whore trying to wrack up some kills. With a multi-man crew you can be watching 3 (3 x 120 degree field views) directions simultaneously, preventing any type of Spec Ops from sneaking up on you. This also allows for timed 'run & gun' tactics to be deployed.
