Well, the front of the mouse looks a bit wierd, but that's all, if they rounded out the front it would look much better. But IMO shape>style, because i personnally prefer the low profile of the Razer mouses.
My mouse pad is like 1mm thick so it feels like you are using it right off the bench surface, it has a rubber backing. Some of those insanely expensive pads which are pretty solid are like 1 centimetre off the bench. For someone like you who hasn't used a pad before it would be pretty uncomfortable. So look for a pad which is thin and sits low on the bench(i.e. no rubber feet) has a rough or bumpy surface which is consistent throughout the surface.
I'd suggest getting used to it and plan to use it all the time. I can't understand why I see people at LANs and everytime they have the latest and greatest mouse pad. No wonder they are so crap - before they get comfortable with using one pad, they buy a new one! IMO if you stick to what you're used to and comfortable with, you will no doubt beat anyone who thinks their $100 mouse pad gives them extra skill.
Except for those real el-cheapo foam backed mouse pads, you'll find you can't go wrong with anything else. As for mouse pad vs without pad, I think you'll find a mouse pad reduces the chances of a "precision" error such as when the mouse skips the surface. It all depends on what surface you have though as some work as good as having a mouse pad.
