    I think BF2 runs too slow for my PC Specs - please check

    Hi all... I have a pretty decent system and I can only get around 35 - 70 FPS.
    Can someone with a similar setup tell me their FPS? And if anyone has any suggestions to fix this problem, please let me know...

    PC Specs:

    ABIT AV8 Socket 939 VIA K8T800 Pro ATX AMD
    Antec TRUEPOWERII TPII-480 BLUE ATX12V 480W
    ATI Radeon X850XT PE 256MB GDDR3 AGP 4X/8X
    AMD Athlon 64 3500+ Venice 1GHz FSB Socket 939
    Thermaltake VENUS 12 80mm Ball Cooling Fan/Heatsink
    CORSAIR XMS 1GB (2 x 512MB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) Unbuffered Dual Channel Kit
    Western Digital 120GB 7200 RPM IDE Ultra ATA100
    Using onboard Sound (Realtek AC97)

    Nothing is Overclocked (Using CAT 5.8 drivers)

    BF2 Settings:

    Terrain = Medium
    Geometry = High
    Effects = High
    Texture = Medium
    Lighting = Medium
    Dynamic Shadows = Off
    Dynamic Light = Off
    Texture Filtering = Low

    resolution = 1024
    100% draw distance

    The Results:

    ... like I said, i seem to be getting between 35 - 70 FPS (at best)

    I also ran 3DMark05 earlier today, and on the 2nd half of the test (where it plays the same demos for the 2nd time but in smaller resolution), it was running very, very slow. Is it like that for everyone else?
    My score was 4234

    In the background, I only have a few apps running... NOD32, TrojanHunger, ATITrayTools, XFire, and IRC. XFire's in-game messaing feature is disabled, as it is known to cause big FPS drops on some systems.

    Thanks!

    The second blimp test ran like my computer was going to explode. I think that was a CPU test; running graphics with just the CPU and no video card support.

    My system seems lower-end than yours

    AMD 2400+
    ATI x800 XL
    Maxtor 60GB Ultra ATA

    3dMark score was 4487

          I have the same system as your, Venice Athlon 64 3200, 2 GB Corsair RAM (mis-matched sticks so its only runnin at 166 mhz) and an MSI 6800 Ultra. I run 1024x768 all Ultra High settings, ingame AF settings, 4x AA, and get a constant 40+ even with artillery, but ill often stay above 50.

          Download that program, and when its done go to control panel and you will see an icon called startup. Click it, and uncheck all the boxes on all the tabs. It makes it to where when your PC starts up there are almost no processes running. I only have 15 MAX while running bf2/xfire/aim/teamspeak.

            Try to delete the files inside the cache folder !!! of bf2

            i have amd 64 3200 2,2 ghz 6600 GT 1 gig ram value select and

            every thing on med , shadows low and dynm lights on low 1024 x 786

            i had your probs too , but since i deleted the files inside the cache folder its runs smooth ( some dips in combat with 10 tanks :P on 64 player server )

              my performance blows also

              my specs:

              asus a8v deluxe
              hiper 480w type-r
              asus x800pro vivo 256mb flashed to XTPE (with vga silencer)
              athlon64 3200 clocked to 2.2ghz
              XP-90 plus 92mm vantec stealth fan
              kingmax hardcore pc4000 4x512mb @ 220mhz (440ddr)
              2xmaxtor 80gb 8mb cache in sata raid0
              sb audigy2
              catalyst 5.6

              my settings:

              Terrain = high
              Geometry = High
              Effects = High
              Texture = high
              Lighting = high
              Dynamic Shadows = low
              Dynamic Light = medium
              Texture Filtering = high

              resolution = 1280x960
              100% draw distance

              i get usually about 50fps+ but on maps like dragon valley it can plumit to 25fps, and even with 256mb onboard video ram and an agp aperture of 256mb it still runs out of memory regularly.

              dim your system looks like it might be suffering from insufficient memory. try installing and running a program called ati tray tools and in the OSD options panel set the "flash osd" to "show all time" and tick all the boxes (edit - see you have it already). when you run bf2 it should show all the figures in one corner of the screen - if the FTM (free texture memory ie ram on card plus AGP aperture) and FVM (free video memory, ie ram on video card) both get close to zero and the "system memory used by process" gets high then your fps problems may be due to insufficient memory. you should look at minimizing the amount of background apps you have before playing.

              i would put a screenshot to explain but the upload manager is being gay and telling me JPG is not a valid image format so i cant.

              i think for 3dmark05 the last run i did got 5709.

              i think dice made a bad decision in keeping the old 1942 engine for bf2 since it is very bad at efficient rendering/usage of memory. their solution seems to have been to force everyone to buy absurd amounts of ram rather than them actually coding the graphics engine from scratch. cheap for them expensive for us.

                Xfire is doing it.

                Once I stopped running Xfire in the background, my FPS shot through the roof.

                I hate Xfire for this and I doubt I'll ever use it again.

                  I use Xfire and never have that problem. Dim your machine should absolutely posotively run faster than that. That's ridiculous. I get between 40-60fps with my rig all high w/2AA lights and shadows on med @ 1280x968. Try deleting your cached files and maybe a clean install. Your rig is capable of all highs and 2xAA no problem. It may be your sound though, try setting sound to Low w/EAX off and software rendering.

                    Thanks for the tips guys..

                    I'll try turning all processes off.. emptying the cache folder, setting Sound options to software rendering, and try playing with the "flash osd" options in ATI Tray Tools..

                    Let ya know how it plays...

                        i run everything on med, except for effects and texture filtering on high, 2x aa, and i get from 30-80 FPS. mostly in the 40-50 area.

                          Ok, I have closed ALL 3rd party processes (including xfire and anti virus), basically shut down all apps running too, empied out the cached folder, rebooted PC.. Set my AUDIO settings to LOW in BF2 and disabled EAX.. Turned on the Flash OSD counters in ATI Tools..

                          When I first loaded into the level, my FVM and FTM were at 161mb, and SMU at 507mb, but after a few mins they stabilized at 42mb FVM/FTM and 512mb SMU.

                          My FPS is still showing at 40 on Zatar Wetlands.

                          WTF is that all about?

                          I haven't changed my Video settings in the game.

                            XFire has been buggy as of late. Turn it off and you'll notice some increase.

                            Check your drivers and defrag. You never know...

                            Another option, which I did just as a "mess around", I threw in a extra stick of 512mb (since I had only 1 slot open) and my game runs a bit better. Maybe more ram might help you...

                              Try running these settings: terrain high, rest on medium except view distance 100%, antialiasing off, texture filtering high. Sound on hardware and medium quality. Once these settings have been saved go out into Windows and clear the cache folder. Run the game and let it redo the shader stuff. If your FPS improves then fine if not you need to look into some BIOS settings and maybe drivers. I have run BF2 with this exact motherboard, a 3000+ and a 6800Ultra and it ran very well with FPS usually above 80.

                              Oh btw Umi.Ryuuzaki what you are suggesting is not a good idea on a dual channel socket 939 system.
