It's a matter of balance and variety. Anti-Tank is meant for... well, anti-tank purposes. :p It'd sort of defeat the purpose if you'd give them an assault rifle, they'd have a much bigger chance to defend themselves when not attacking a tank. The idea is for these classes to stick to their purposes and teamwork with the other combat classes.
Bingo! Solid Snake is absolutely right, it's not about realism but balance foremost and variety as well.
I sure hope you aren't talking to me...since I know for a fact that you've never seen me play...its a good idea to watch who you call a noob since you never know who might end up handing your ass to you.
dont get your panties in a bunch, it was directed at the thread starter.
I've downloaded the 21st Century Warfare mod and its pretty amazing, the M24 has a feture i'm sure alot of people will like. but the still gave an engineer a shotgun also the Anti-tank has anti-tank mines
Its all about balance, the at class would be overpowered according to them if they had a normal gun. Eng wise, no freaking idea, makes the class suck. They should have at least made the unlock a different gun. Sniper cant have 1 hit kill or it would be unfair, takes 2 with us and unlock and if the semi autos took 1 hit everyone would use em. As for support, no clue bout that dont play it.
You can tak about balance but if you 'raise the stakes' for every class then it doesn't matter and if anything it just makes people more cautious.
ie: the saw in the game AA its considerably more accurate than in bf2 and the RPK is even more accurate and more powerful and both guns have the option of a bipod which increaes accuracy but when its down u cant move mre than 45 degrees until its raised again.
the RPG men have AK74su's and the SF have a M4 with various optional parts like a acog 4x scope and a grenade launcher.
The point is its silly too tone down these weapons cos if u make them AL realistic it is balanced and just makes things more realistic and fun :)
just imagine if the sniper was a one hit killer, people would spend their days posting on forums whining. Agreed that they should not have called it a .50 cal tho, chance it to some made up name mebbe..
Now, I think BF2 is too much based on BF:42, its should have been 40% BFV 60% BF:42. In BFV engineer wasnt that most balanced kit. It mines sucked cause no one really used tanks and wrench was useless as no one again really used tanks. But the gun was something great. A rifle. It killed, but losed against soldier weapons.
Now in BF2 mines and wrench are hella more important, but the gun is total crap.New gun needed. Now the problem would be is there a gun which would match with engis role. Submachine gun would sound good? Yes it would. But then AT needs a new gun too. This may sound crazy, but him could be given the shotgun. Why, cause his unlock ALREADY is a shotgun.
Now if we think about Engi's new weapon choice, MP5 would sound good huh? Well unlock could be H&K UMP-45. Unlock would bring different style of play. It could be like waterred down G3. Less bullets for power and control.

So folks, whatya think?
Pretty good idea. Although, in truth, Tank Crews (Which you could kinda' assume the engineer is designed for) would be served just was all with an M4 with the AimPoint. It's about the same size as an Mp5, and offers more range and accuracy.
Hm. Having spent five and a half years as a Marine Combat Engineer (MOS 1371) I've something to say on that matter. CEs are not repairmen. That's MotorT. I understand why DICE reassigned the duties for the sake of simplicity, but in doing so they've completely diluted the main purpose of the CE: Blowing **** up. C4, TNT, Dynamite, Flex Linear, Claymores, Shape Charges, Cratering Charges, AT Mines, the list goes on.
I've no problem giving the Spec Ops some C4, but surely, surely the CE has a greater claim to it. In my not-so-lengthy career I've blown well over four tons of C4 (including Line Charges) and as such, it would seem that the Engineer should at least carry it.
From my experience the CEs loadout should read as follows:
1 Knife (Gerber)
1 M-16A2 (6 mags) (30rnds)
2 M67 Fragmentation Grenades
4 M21 Anti-Tank Mines
4 5.6lb satchels of C4
1 All-purpose wrench (out of neccessity, if not accuracy)
Oh, and another thing, as anyone who as ever actually been in combat will tell you, jumping around like a ****ing pidgeon is the quickest way to get dead. Not to mention that the last time I checked, the average Marine with a Standard Combat Load could not jump the approximately 6 feet depicted in Battlefield 2.
nothing like some cold hard truth from someone who knows to balance a thread out.
Eng was my favorite class in 42, in BF:V useless, and BF2 even more useless. If Dice would just count FF mine TK's as suicides with no punish it would solve the problem over nite. The Eng would get his main weapon back without 20 teammates running over mines while ignoring the way out thats unmined, even after being told several times WATCH FOR MY MINES MIDDLE BASE BRIDGE or similar.
