I am not sure about rebooting or re-entering your CD key, unless you made a mistake the first time. If so, you may need to clear the registry line that holds your Cd key information and they follow the instructions to re-enter it.
IMHO – When you bought the game, it may not have been sealed with the EA tape on the box? And thus someone opened, copied, and is using your CD key.
There should be a message stating that your CD key is already in use rather than a generic error.
In any case, contact EA, email / phone, you may need to provide a fax of your receipt for the game.
