Same thing happened in DC. It's because of how kills are calculated. The last thing to hit a vehicle before it blows up is credited with the kill. No matter what weapon it is. If a vehicle is on fire and about to explode and you hit it with the smoke grenade(a weapon as far as the game cares) after which the vehciles finally blows up without anything else hitting it, the smoke will get the credit.

You don't see it much because the odds just aren't in it's favor. I mean really - who throws a smoke grenade on top of a burning tank?

i actually did this in DC. Someone spawned in (enemy) and i was Spec Ops running around the other side of the base. Threw a smoke to divert the enemy, and hit someone, who had just spawned.

I saw it pop up saying i killed with a smoke grenade, and i stopped and just looked at it. HUH? how the hell? then i got sliced open.

Grenades do damage even when they just hit you on their trajectory. I mean that they can kill someone before they explode. I once blew up a tank by throwing a grenade at it: it blew up at the same time when i heard the "clang" sound of the grenade hitting the metal armoured surface and i got the kill
