Effective commanding?

Hi all :)

I've only had bf2 a day or so, and today decided to have my first go at commanding, which i absolutely love doing.

But:
Am i wrong to be sitting on top of a hill/building all round just watching my command menu, and not actually fighting? Once round a retard shouted at me, "Commander, get of your fat ass and start fighting." To which i responded by sending his squad to attack a suicidal position.

Should i be fighting on the front lines with my men? Seems pretty stupid to me, but anyone got tips/advice on the best ways to command?

NO! nothing annoys me more or makes the commander more useless than when he gets in a vehicle and fights...it distracts him from watching and helping his troops who may be in need of a supply/uav etc

There is no such thing as "effective commanding", just turn on the UAV every time it's ready, drop supply boxes on friendly tanks, and fire the artillery at the closest enemy flag.

No, I always find a good hiding spot and command the whole round entirely by the command map, so that I can best support my team. I only fight to defend myself, if some assassin has discovered my position and has come to get me.

As far as commanding goes, use SCAN to get a general picture of the position of enemy units, then UAV the best target for your team, or where they are currently fighting to support their action.

Then drop supply boxes to groups of guys that may need it.

As far as other features of commanding, involving strategy, and proper placement of squads and assigning objectives, noone ever listens so I don't bother anymore.

Commanders are just a glorified Support class, since nobody listens to their orders, or bothers to fix their assets when they're down. Long story short, playing Commander sucks in this game.

I just want to throw my vote in that yes, I find a tasty hiding spot and command from there. This, however, is just my way of doing things. I know of one person who has over 21,000 commander points and is damn good at it, and gets in the mix.

Commander is a full time position, and it requires full attention to the battlefield. Just find a good hiding place and command from there. You should be doing radar scans every chance you have, and "spotting" the enemies surrounding your allies with right click -> spot over the blips. On top of that, you should be placing artillery, supplies, and UAV's as they become available.

Sometimes fighting is possible, sometimes not. It's not required, except of course if the enemy is right on top of you. If squads are taking orders, you have a lot more to do, otherwise it's just the spotting that will keep you busy. Continuous scan/UAV/arty doesn't take up too much time.

Once you've got the hang of it and you know the maps better, fighting becomes more possible, but not mandatory. But remember, you don't get any points on your own, since the commander score is basically the average for the team (before doubling for wins). Only other players getting points will get you points.

Be as involved in the battle as you can be, without being negligent as a commander.

When I go into a server and get commander then people like me for that. I actually pay attention to supply drop locations, UAV areas, where to blow up the enemy.

Most the time I find it effective to sit back in a good location and cover your assets, or sit in a good location in the enimies base and constantly destroy their assets...But the majority of the time should be spent in the commander menu....

I would say the only time this wouldnt be the case is when there is so few players in the game that sitting out the whole time would actually be worse then fighting alongside....

If I stay in one place , il normally hide near my artillery or other comm. assets incase a spec op comes to blow them up. Otherwise I sometimes jump in a BH, as a passenger so I can command whilst being transported around the battelfield and maybe jump out and help if the need be. I think u can move around a bit, so long as u regularly check ur tab

It all depends on the (communication-)skills of the commander, if you just start giving out order after order why would they follow up? There is more to getting people to do what you want, you have to make it attractive for them to complete the objectives.
This includes communicating with your squads (by Voip i mean) and commending them when they are reaching the objectives does wonders too.

For instance i usually wait with giving orders untill a squad captures a flag, i quickly commend them and order them to attack a flag nearby. They will almost always follow up. After that they will have some confidence in you as a commander and listen to you more.
