I was playing on a server not too long ago on a server with a group of players who weren’t exactly the pick of the litter as far as “Battlefield 2” is concerned. I’m not tooting my own horn here when I say that, not at all. I’m no hot shot myself, but I’ve been playing long enough to know the basic rules of how to play the game, one of which being if you don’t know how to pilot an airborne vehicle then don’t pilot it!
Well, it was the start of a new game at the Dalian Plant as the USMC and I decide to spawn at the top of aircraft carrier. I head straight for the Blackhawk, but since I don’t know how to pilot it, I stand next to it and wait for someone to come and take the position so I can gun. Well, eventually someone does come and takes the pilot position and I hop into the gunner’s position. After that, the pilot waits a moment longer for the Blackhawk to fill with his teammates up so I’m thinking, “Hey, this guy can’t be a complete twit! At lease he’s smart enough to wait for his own teammates to fill up the chopper before he takes off.”
How wrong I was.
After the chopper is filled, he lifts off from the ground and starts to make his way to land. It’s not long before I come to realize that he has no real piloting skills whatsoever. He dips up and down like an amateur and sways back in forth in a way that’s making me, and surely the other passengers, really nervous. Halfway to land, the chopper is losing stability. I’m thinking, “What the crap?” and look at the hub to see that the pilot position is vacant.
The pilot of my team's fully-occupied Blackhawk actually bailed out of the vehicle, over the ocean, and didn’t even bother to warn his own teammates that he did it!
I panic and, like anyone who knows remotely anything about playing “Battlefield 2”, bail out of the chopper and parachute to the water. Unfortunately, everyone else in the chopper didn’t catch on and they perished in the crash. What is left from this is Mr. I-Pilot-A-Transport-Vehicle-That-I-Don’t-Know-How-To-Use-And-As-A-
Consequence-Get-My-Own-Teammates-Killed-In-The-Process and I being stranded out in the middle of the sea, between the carrier and land. I’m stuck out here, unable to swim to land, and unable to use my own weapon to kill myself. What I do next is call my transport. I call and call and no one comes. I even send a typed message asking someone to pick me up, but still no one comes for me. After a moment, another Blackhawk from my team is hovering near me. I send another request for a pick-up, but still, they ignore me and just keep on cruising by. After a while, I get fed up and just left the server.
I’m sure people complain about this all the time so forgive me if it seems like I'm preaching to the choir here, but I think that there’s a moral to this story and that’s if you don’t know how to pilot a Blackhawk, or any vehicle at that matter, than please don’t do it. Your teammates will appreciate it and you’ll find yourself having a more pleasurable “Battlefield 2” experience due to it.
