Re: Dell or a self build

You can build a computer that'll run everything on High at 1280x960 with 2/4 AA for about 1000-1200 w/o keyboar/mouse, speakers, or monitor. You can probably go +/- one or two hundered dollars depending on what specific hardware brands you want, and whether you want a faster processor. Case, PSU, cooling, 2gigs PC3200, Athlon 64 3000+ Venice, X800XL PCI-E,Audigy 2 ZS, Asus A8N-E. For Nvidia a 6800GT and the A8N-SLI would be my recommendations.

Re: Dell or a self build

The last time I bought a new off the shelf PC was in 1996, a P133, and I only just got rid of the original case/keyboard and mouse...

            Ever since I've upgraded/self built.

            The latest:
            AMD Athlon 64 3200+ (Venice Core) £110
            2GB (2x1GB) Corsair Select PC3200 DDR400 £120
            MSI K8T Neo2-F MoBo £60
            80gb Maxtor ATA133 HD £35
Gigabyte Turbo Ed. 6600GT@525/1160 (Purchased two months ago £115)
            Tagan 420-U01 PSU £50
Soundblaster Live! 5.1 (Purchased new a few years ago £40)
Creative Soundworks 2.1 Speakers/Subwoofer (Purchased new a few years ago £40)
            Coolermaster Cavalier 3 case £60
            Samsung DVD ROM £15
Lite On CDRW (Purchased a couple of years ago £35)
Microsoft keyboard and optical mouse (Purchased new 18 months ago £20)
Hansol 710P 17" CRT Monitor (Purchased new a few years ago £150)

£565/$1017 for the new stuff. Bear in mind Stateside prices are cheaper than here in the UK, so you should save a couple of hundred $ on that price for the same parts or get some better kit like a 6800GT/Ultra.

If you already have decent peripherals, then in the long run it will be cheaper to self build. Keep the bits you don't need and eventually you'll have a useable second PC like so:

            AMD 2500+
            1.25GB PC3200 RAM
            KT7A rev 2 Mobo
            Gigabyte Geforce 5700 TurboForce Ed.
            40GB HD
            48xCDROM
            Midi Case
            15" LCD monitor (gift )
Wireless Keyboard & Mouse (gift )

In the conservatory, connected to the net/lan via wireless.

            Go for self built.
