Yeah, drivers can be like colours...you can simply prefer one over another and not have to have a reason.

I'm sure the drivers perform virtually identical. Anything is better than using 2 year old drivers.

also another nice thing is, that the F.E.A.R Single player demo comes with alot newer EAXAC3.DLL file than the creative driver

          Hrm..I have 6.14.357.7

I wonder if with all the driver installing and uninstalling I have been doing lately that I mixed something up?

Yeah, for some reason when I go from 6.14.357.7 to 6.14.357.8, I get cracking and popping.

I'll try playing around with ct_oal.dll versions a bit today if I get bored

Taken from the Creative boards's contributor alexs3d2:

The BF2OpenAL.dll file shipped with BF2 is an older version of the DS3D wrapper. This means it translates OpenAL calls in DS3D before doing any processing. You can change that file with the newer Wrapper, wrap_oal.dll version 1.1.3.0, or the OpenAL32.dll which will allow the game to work in pure OpenAL mode as long as your soundcard supports it, or you could even force hardware acceleration of OpenAL calls by replacing it with the Audigy's OpenAL driver, ct_oal.dll
                    Complicated, eh?

Well i just got home so... with your new hobby todat Talus of testing the ct_oal.dll version let me know what you get on that. SO does this mean that you are going so this http://developer.creative.com/articl...&top=38&aid=46

and then today's task as well lol.

                        Yup..pretty much!

I'll certainly be keeping this thread updated with my antics.

Yeah, just noticed that too. Although the description hasn't changed, you get a new OpenALwEAX.exe now from that link above w/OpenAL32.dll v6.14.357.9 and Wrap_oal.dll v1.1.4.0.

I'm currently using ct_oal as my BF2OpenAL.dll replacement though. It appears that OpenAL32.dll, Wrap_oal.dll, and ct_oal.dll are all totally independent of each other -- each has the exact same set of dll functions in them.

Anyone know exactly what's the difference b/t them? I think this is true, at least?

                            1) ct_oal.dll -- this is creative's driver. Only works for Creative sound cards but provides full hardware acceleration of OpenAL. Best possible case?

                            2) OpenAL32.dll -- this driver created by Creative and NVidia, so ??? provides hw OpenAL acceleration for NVidia sound chips? provides limited HW OpenAL acceleration for Creative and NVidia sound hardware?

                            3) Wrap_oal.dll -- this just maps OpenAL calls to DirectSound equivalents, so this is the least ideal solution (software only therefore more cpu intensive than above 2 options?) but works for any sound card out there.

i have not used the ct_oal.dll or i just did the openal32.dll. i do not think there is a difference in them unless if anyone can point out that there is. As foor your theory Wrection very interesting thought, but i think it backwards with 1 and 2. And with #3 i do not know about that one. But i am not point out that you are wrong or anything i am just suggestion that your theory with 1 and 2 needs to be switiched. But maybe i am wrong.....

ct_oal.dll being the hardware accelerated OpenAL driver for Creative cards is actually the one that I'm most sure about, only b/c I've seen this mentioned before on other forums and Creative's own forum. But then again, who knows if they really knew what they were talking about...
