Okay, I've been browsing this forum and there's a lot of posts on sniping and a few complaints that the M95 unlock isn't what it should be, or is worse than the M24.
The unlocks are not supposed to be upgrades, but offer an alternative to the usual kit weapons.
The M95 is most like the M24, so I'm going to leave out the autosnipers for comparitive purposes. Most people know that the M95 gains the ability to shoot through bullet-proof glass windows, so it has this over the M24. Both rifles do 95 gross damage to a target. The M95 however, has the same first bullet accuracy as the autosnipers, whereas the M24 is a little bit more accurate and therefore better over long range.
The problem is everyone ends the comparision here, with the conclusion that the M24 is much better because it's better to have the accuracy over the ability to shoot through glass, which is only likely to be of benefit in rare situations.
As far as I've read no-one realises the other perk that the M95 gets for sacrificing a bit of accuracy - It is the only small-arms rifle in the game to completely ignore personal body armour when calculating damage.
Personal body armour is a perk that comes with the Assault, Support and Anti-Tank kits. Body Armour reduces all damage to the body by a 3rd, or more specifically, any damge inflicted through body armour is multiplied by 0.7
However, the 50 cal round from the M95 ignores this body armour affect. So, a hit from the M95 always does 95 damage, no matter what class you are, you're down to those little 2 red bars of health. However, a shot the chest from an M24 when I'm playing anti-tank will inflict on me approx 66 damage, because the body armour is factored in.
If someone is hit by an M95, one pistol shot will always finish them off. You will also always get a kill assist when you hit someone with an M95.
In my opinion the ability to ignore armour is a much greater perk than the ability to shoot through glass. And both perks combine to provide a creditable alternative to the M24 rifle, and bring the M95 in line with other unlocks.
A note on realism vs gameplay - A one shot kill rifle does not belong in Bf2. As far as I'm concerned though, the M95 does do more damage than the M24 against hard targets, and is unique for the special property of it's ammunition (only one to ignore armour). So it's as 'realistic' and 'special' as can possibly be allowed in a balanced game.
