I think playing BF2 is the best idea. Learning how to aim, exploiting the strengths of crouching/prone, and single shot really help.
In a way I think playing games like UT or Quake don't help all that much. They're good for reactions, but in BF2, the playstyle is quite different. You have to be a bit more methodical and prudent. You can't rush around killing who you please if you want to have some say in how often you die. ;x I mean, do how you want, but I'm beginning to slow down my play a bit and progress as a group. The game also becomes more fun because you die less, and start killing more than be killed. You get less frustrated.
If you play on 64 man servers. Don't (just yet, anyway). If you want to learn the intricacies, then play on 32 man or maybe even less. 64 man servers can get mildly chaotic as there are just people everywhere, while 32 man servers are a little more progressive and slower. :) Engagements are usually more predictable and allow you to explore different avenues of tactics or whatnot. I often get the impression of 64 man servers being a bit of a 'fest'. When you're happy, *then* go back to 64 man. :p
The thought for the day?
"Pick your own battles."
