Why are the maps foggy sometimes?

Sometime I have noticed certain maps to be really foggy and I can't see far at all, while other times the same maps aren't very foggy at all. Is this a server setting or is something wrong with my machine?

    Thanks!

        Tanks, or smoke grenades.

If you are talking about a map like Songhua Stalemate which has fog all around you, it's not the server setting, that's how the map was made.

or like strike on karkand, this map has some sand dust in it, it's for ginving you a bit of other gameplay, also balance I think, otherwise the MEC could shoot every US guy easely from there spawn point

No this isn't a grenade or something, it's the WHOLE map. And yes I think it has happened on Songhua stalemate and maybe also on Karkand. I know there is supposed to be a little fog but usually I can see pretty far. Just sometimes it gets really foggy, and I wonder if something is wrong with my machine. Mainly cuz others seem to be able to snipe me from much farther distances than I can see at the time. I was wondering if there was some kind of built-in code which shortened viewing distances to keep FPS up or anything...

Or maybe it's just psychological...I dunno.

hey sir why don't you read the whole thread before making useless comments. Last time I checked the amount of fog on any given map doesn't change according to time of day.

So is there any way I can know if the drawing distance is being changed dynamically? Does BF2 do this at all? Or does it stick to whatever you set it to in the video options.

I have an A64 3000+ with a 6600GT, so generally draw distance is very far. Just sometimes it comes really far in for some reason.

If you have it set on 100% then everything you see such as fog or sandstorm/dust is just all normal.

Draw distance doesn't create fog/smog-looking material... it just limits the objects/players/vehicles you can see at a certain distance.

Maybe turning the effects down to LOW, or the Geometry down to LOW, makes some kind of change to the way the fog appears or something? I'm not sure.

Turning it down decreases the fog a little bit not by much but enough to be sniped on some maps without seeing the sniper.

Yeah. Here are some screens I took to show the difference between foggy maps and low viewing distance. (set at 50% - the lowest possible).

Here is fog, on Strike at Karkand:

There is no way to rid of the fog.

Here is low viewing distance on Gulf of Oman. (50% - the lowest possible)

Notice that it doesn't look the same as the fog on Karkand, and an example of that is the crane... a piece of it is barely visible, but the rest of it remains invisible until you move closer.

Now, setting the view distance up to 100% makes it appear like this:

Notice that the entire crane is visible, along with the building under construction that is almost directly below the crane.... this makes a HUGE difference.

So as you can see, low viewing distance doesn't really create "fog" as the original poster is explaining..... it just literally makes things that are far away invisible!

Another thing to note is that the Strike at Karkand map was with 100% viewing distance... and even THEN, where I was standing right there, the fog was still very noticable and was all around me. Compare the Gulf of Oman screen to the Strike at Karkand screen and you'll quickly see that the fog truly creates an entirely different atmosphere and makes for some more intense fighting.

draw distance has nothing to do with the fog on each map. If you play with the map editor, you can see that there is a setting for fog, that is unrelated to the draw distance setting in the in-game settings.

I mostly play sharqi and have noticed that sometimes there really is more fog. Because I play as a sniper I can see the difference. And I did not change my settings. Luckily it doesn't happen too often.
