you need a pretty good card to run with 64 ppl smoothly online 100 bucks might get you 32 but 64 might be rough

Geforce 6800 128MB is cheap here in norway and it's got acceptable performance. I wouldn't go for anything cheaper.

9800 Pro cost me £114 i dont know about dollars?

I can play 32 perfectly, 64 player servers are quite laggy so Im guessing £150+? - 200?

You'll defiantly see an improvement with another gig of RAM, also make sure your computers defragmented. I mean it really depends on how much you want to spend getting a game to work. I mean in a few months you'll probably get fed up of it. Also a gig of RAM can cost around a hundred pounds.

Use this the program from this website: http://www.ccleaner.com/ to clear all the crap what’s stored when you visit websites and on your computer in general.
Make sure your Optimiser cache is cleared, Documents > Battlefield 2 > Mods > BF2 > Cache. Delete all the folders in that directory, what should be named similar too "{D7B71EE2-0D08-11CF-C76A-0820A1C2CB35}_2484_2"

When you’ve done that, load BF2, join a server as normal, it should take a while while your video settings are optimised again.
Then defragment your computer using the windows defragmenter.

I’m not sure why your game crashes to the desktop its never happened to me, I’m sure some other people know something about it.
I bet they say, “make sure your drivers are up-to date though.
