Random Reboots while Playing BF2
Hi All,
Been lurking for a while and have finally decided that I'm ready to post and beg for help. I've searched the forums and have seen multiple issues similar to mine. I've tried many if not all of the solutions and I just wanted to post my experiences. My machine suffers from random reboots about every 20 - 30mins of gameplay. In nearly ever case, the screen will freeze and there will be a high-pitched sound emitted from the speakers just before the restart. I've checked the event log and discovered there is a report of SaveDump Event ID: 1001 with the following details:

Event Category: None
Event ID: 1001
Date: 8/3/2005
Time: 6:10:50 PM
User: N/A
Computer: PC NAME
Description:
The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x1000008e (0xc000001d, 0xf7ba9fdd, 0xb7f8881c, 0x00000000). A dump was saved in: C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\Mini080305-02.dmp.

Of course that's not enough info to go on as it doesn't site the offending file or app. Any help here would be greatly appreciated. I seem to recall that at some point in the past I did not receive these SaveDump entries in the Event Log when the system would restart but now I'm not so sure.
Here's what I have:
Dell Dimension XPS Gen1
P4 2.8Ghz (Northwood)
1GB DDR PC3200 (4 DIMMs total)
Western Digital 120GB UATA HD
ATI Radeon 9800 (non-pro)
SB Audigy 2
MS Wireless keyboard and mouse
Logitech Wingman Extreme USB
Intel 10/100 VE NIC
NEC CD-RW Drive
NEC DVD+/-RW Drive
XPS proprietary 460W PS
Here's what I've tried so far:
- Completely uniinstalled and reinstalled BF2 with 1.02 patch (deleted all files and folders after uninstall)
- Removed cache folders in My Docs\BF2 folder
- Lowered display and audio settings (1024x768)(turned off EAX and lowered audio acceleration in game options)
- Completely uninstalled and reinstalled the Catalyst 5.7 drivers (used the ATI Uninstall util to perform a full cleanup)
- Completely uninstalled and reinstalled the beta OpenAL drivers for the Audigy2 card (used DriverCleaner 3.3)(Followed instructions posted by Kaos guy)
- Set the DXDIAG audio acceleration to various levels (from basic to full)
- Set processor affinity permanently to processor 0 (in lieu of disabling HyperThreading altogether in the BIOS)
- Replaced heatsink and used AS5 on CPU
- Replaced ATI heatsink with VGA Silencer (used AS5 here as well)
- Checked temps and voltages with MBM 5 while playing (everything appears to be quite normal)
- Tested RAM exhaustively with MEMTEST86
- Defragmented all paritions on the HD several times
- Killed all unnecessary apps prior to starting BF2
- Set desktop resolution to match in-game resolution prior to starting the game.
I may have left out one or two items but that's a pretty thorough list. Point is, nothing has resolve the issues and I'm getting pretty pissed. I don't even get as pissed when I'm killed while playing the game as I do when my fracking PC restarts. About the only thing I have not tried is formatting and reinstalling Windows and everything else from scratch. I really want to avoid that for now and from what I've read from other users, it doesn't seem to resolve the issues anyway. Any assistance is greatly appreciated!
