If you do your research instead of asking us ATi and nVidia Fanboys do you own damn research!

Both cards are good, but one is all ways better in the end.

Do some research on sites like Hexus.net, tomshardware.com, anandtech.com and such.

But if anything the 6800GT out performs the X800XL by small, medium, and large margins and sometimes vice versa, but go with the 6800GT.

I can back up what I said if you do your research.

6800GT, you can OC it to 6800 Ultra levels while the X800XL is very hard to OC. Quick cancel your order on the X800XL right now! Anyway I have an X800XL, it's not a bad card by all means, but the 6800GT is better especially if you can get it at around the same pricepoint.

Nvidia cards in general always outperform ATi in opengl applications, sometimes by quite a huge margin. The 6800GT has this advantage over the X800XL. It also pretty much equals it on every other level. Sometimes a small amount behind somtimes a small amount in front. So performance wise they are pretty much level. So you have to consider it in other ways.

The 6800GT has shader model 3. The X800XL doesn't. This will matter in future games. The only ATi cards that will have shader model 3 are the upcoming new models which aren't out yet.

If you want to see why shader model 3 is important. Go here and look at the comparison screenshots. http://www.pcper.com/article.php?aid=36 and read the article. The screenshots are comparing 1.1 shader and 3.0 shader though. Still upcoming games especially Unreal Engine 3 games will benefit from SM3.

Personally I think it's an easy choice.

Get the 6800GT, most come with overclocking software that you can use, and from what I have heard, this card can reach 20+Mhz overclocking without much sweat.

I've never had problems with either brand. I have 2 ATI and 1 Nvidia card. All of which work great.
