    Bad stuttering? - solution!

For the record, I'm still running win2k, so I'm not sure if this only works in just win2k or XP as well.

I've been fighting this ever since the demo.

Sometimes, the graphics just starts stuttering really bad, as in 1 or 2 fps for 1-10 seconds, and then it smooths out again. (The drawfps value would never go below 15fps either during this.) I used to think it was related to sound problems, since I would get it if a Helo flew overhead and I hadn't even seen it yet.

Sometimes I would see it where the graphics would start stuttering, and any mouse movement would be amplified 100x, so instead of moving the mouse and turning an expected 20 degrees to the left, you are suddenly turned 180 degrees around.

See this link for a thread I started about this a while ago.

    Things I tried:
AGP Aperture to 256MB helped a bit.
dxdiag disabling AGP texture caching and reducing audio acceleration to Basic helped a bit.
Deleting the cache often helped a bit.
Turning off all 'Dynamic *' options in the video helped, and running Low on most others.
Running most optioins on 'Low' got it mostly playable.

    But nothing ever fixed it.

All that on a 3000 XP cpu on an NF2 mboard, 1GB of RAM, and a 6800GT video card!!! Needless to say, I was very disappointed with my performance from the system.

In the past, I have applied a few .reg tweaks to windows to optimize the memory usage. One was to use more ram for the file system cache to speed up disk access.

I just installed NVTweak and under its Settings|Advanced Windows Settings menu item, it said I had it optimized for 'server' mode. I changed this to 'workstation' mode and rebooted.

    I haven't had a single stutter since.

I have now turned a lot of video options up a notch or two and framerate is still fine, and smooth, and much better looking!!! It runs ~30-40fps on the ground, or ~80-90 looking out at the water. I'll keep turning them up as long as it is still smooth. I haven't hit the limit yet!

I hope this helps some other frustrated gamers.

when in NVTweak i try to go to (Settings)-(Advanced Windows Tweaks) but i get an error which says "Run Time Error '339':
Component 'MSCOMCTL.OCX' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." That is the error i get and i really need to get to the advanced windows tweaks so any advice would be appreciated thanks!! Im running windows xp home.

Well if you have a missing system file you can always extract it from the XP cd using MS-DOS.

I got it working, had to repair the missing files, and mine was already on workstation mode, so i still get some stuttering, ill probably jsut upgrade to 2 gigs soon.

do you have onboard sound ?

i hear thats a huge issue for people with your mother board & processor

you should pick up a soundcard.. honestly your computer should be able to run the game at mostly high settings without any slowdown

Holy crap! Am I ever the noob. I hadn't even looked at my clock settings in ages. My BFG 6600GT OC was running at 300/525! I wonder how long it's been running on easy street like that!

Ok, here is what I found on this so far:

DisableExecutivePaging - When enabled, this setting will prevent the paging of the Win2k Executive files to the hard drive, causing the OS and most programs to be more responsive. However, it is advised that people should only perform this tweak if they have a significant amount of RAM on their system (more than 128 MB), because this setting does use a substantial portion of your system resources. By default, the value of this key is 0. To enable it, set it to 1.

LargeSystemCache - When enabled (the default on Server versions of Windows 2000), this setting tells the OS to devote all but 4 MB of system memory (which is left for disk caching) to the file system cache. The main effect of this is allowing the computer to cache the OS Kernel to memory, making the OS more responsive. The setting is dynamic and if more than 4 MB is needed from the disk cache for some reason, the space will be released to it. By default, 8MB is earmarked for this purpose. This tweak usually makes the OS more responsive. It is a dynamic setting, and the kernel will give up any space deemed necessary for another application (at a performance hit when such changes are needed). As with the previous key, set the value from 0 to 1 to enable. Note that in doing this, you are consuming more of your system RAM than normal. While LargeSystemCache will cut back usage when other apps need more RAM, this process can impede performance in certain intensive situations. According to Microsoft, the "[0] setting is recommended for servers running applications that do their own memory caching, such as Microsoft SQL Server, and for applications that perform best with ample memory, such as Internet Information Services."

I had enabled both of those settings.

Considering how intensive BF2 is on RAM, no wonder this causes stuttering!

I'm going to try turning off the executive paging and see what impact it might have on it too. I'll try to see if just one is better, or if both help framerates even more.

So your saying that if i install this Tweak thing it will end my stuttering?
Ive tried many things to end the stutter but nothing worked.

If, at some point, those registry tweaks were made to your installation of windows, then setting them to '0' (ie default) will (based on my experience) help a lot.

If those tweaks haven't been made, then this isn't your cause of stuttering.

These 2 tweaks are listed on a lot of windows tweak sites (where I got it from originally), so I suspect some of the people on this forum have them turned on, as I did.

                            Also

It really does seem BF2 hates Nvidia cards...

                            heres my set up:

                            3.2Ghz Intel 2MB of cache
                            6800GT 256MB PCIExpress
                            1 GB PC4200 (533Mhz) DDR2 Ram

And I get the stuttering problems even if I run the details on medium / low. Also I tend to get connection problems whenever I'm in the server for more then 20 mins. 3.0MB download 383kbs Upload < Cable.

So I'm going to try all this tweak stuff and see if it helps.

I believe NVT Tweak is for nvidia users only.
