Sure, I'll answer it myself. The Macintosh was a computer released by Apple in 1984. The name was so popular that it was shortened and is now used to represent Apple's desktop products. iMac, eMac, PowerMac, Mac Mini etc. The word 'Book' is used to represent their portables - iBook and Powerbook. All of these products use an IBM PowerPC RISC chip.
Essentially IBM are holding Apple back due to poor R&D and supply. Therefore, Apple made the decision to switch to Intel-based Macs. Notice that the word Mac is still in use? This still shows that Apple have the upper hand however. They have been simultaneously compiling versions of OS X for both RISC and SISC chips ever since 10.0. Moreso, they have offered a simple option in X-Code (their IDE) to create a 'Universal Binary' - an option to compile your program for both PPC and Intel-based Macs.
But what if you want to run a program made for PPC, and you're running Intel-based? Oh, doesn't matter - because Apple have included an emulation environment called Rosetta which means that PPC and Intel-based applications (oh, and 64 and 32 bit apps too) can run side-by side without anything to tell the user otherwise.
Show me a version of Windows which could run so many fundamentally different programs all at once, without lag and without any annoying settings or environments to run them in. Its the Apple mantra - "It just works".
