How to get 1.02 to install 100% successfully (lame method)

This will fix Unmodified content Error Also

Ok, here's the deal. I am guessing that the patch fails installation of certain upgrades due to some bad synchronization between its extraction to a temp directory and its installation.

I installed BF2 as usual from my DVD.
To be sure what I did I used md5summer from

and the client 1.0 md5 file. Just copy that entire hash codes from wiki to a text file. Run md5summer, browse to the BF2 install directory and click verify in md5summer. It will ask you for the verification file. Provide the one you created by copying off from wiki.

~100% times your original client installation will be good.

    Now onto the patch.
    Get 2 copies of it
1] the zip file from http://forum.eagames.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=3409
    direct link -http://www.ea-zone.dk/CS/BF2_v1.02_Patch.zip
2] the official installation file from EA/BF2 homepage.

Now that you have those two, extract out the zip file contents into your BF2 installation folder at its root level.

Run the patch.exe file. (run it via cmd and not directly click it or else you wont see where it fails)

Once it exits (completed or failed) do another checksum, but this time use client 1.02 md5 hashes from wiki (same way as before)

md5summer will tell you whats ****ed up.
If all goes good, you will have the game patched.

if not, keep running the patch.exe file till either md5summer says all good, or patch.exe file says nothing more to modify.

patch.exe will fail 1/2 way through giving the famous patch.rtp failed message. But if you repeat the process 5-6 times, it will finally succeed.

Though its success doesn't mean everything is patched. Only when md5summer says all hash codes are good, then everything is patched.

once the patch.exe says its successful, still keep running it until you see that md5summer is not reporting any reduction in its errors.

Mine initially had 42 files ****ed, but after repeated patch.exe runs it finally reduced to only 3 files not patched. Most likely for everybody its will be the 2 biggest files -

    objects_client.zip
    common_client.zip

Now that we see applying patch.exe makes no difference to the md5summer's report, switch to the official EA installshield patch.

Run that. That should definitely NOT fail and will pass.
    Re run md5summer.
    Re-patch using that.
    Re run md5summer.

Keep doing it till md5summer gives all GREEN, good to go...I personally had to run this file only 2 times. and that's it.

To summarize it, all you need to do is keep running patch.exe till you see no improvement in md5summer and then keep running installshield patch till success, each time running md5summer and checking after each patching process. Note, you should check the hashes only from client 1.02 file.

You dont have to do ANYTHING with punkbuster....dont even try or you will mess up your hash check.

      G'day dark_helmet

I ran the process as you suggested however, I received 11 md5 errors following primary install (e.g. from DVD), keep in mind this is a clean install and would explain why i was getting kicked from ranked servers ("UNMODIFIED CONTENT") prior to even patching game (earlier issue), hence what do you suggest i do.

      regards Kelloggs

thats seems weird, and looks like the dvd there is some kind of read error from the dvd.

On the other hand, are you from USA ? bcos who know europe DVD might have different stuff...

but in either case, after trying a few times to clean install, if you still get md5 errors, I would suggest you ignore them, and proceed to patch the game.

and then check your md5s with the client 1.02

BTW, in what files do you get the md5 errors ?

also check your dvd for scratches, try copying it off to another dvd and use that to install, or copy it off to the HDD and then reinstall...

lastly I would also suggest that you do the install in the default EA Games\Battlefeild 2 directory and not anywhere else.

if it is indeed due to dvd scratches or defect, you should go an get it exchanged.

g'day again dark I'm in little old Australia, I just reinstalled and ran check got 12 errors following md5 checker - 1 more than before all files seem to be associated with mods/bf2 folder - e.g. coomon_client.zip or objects_client.zip or some of the client or server files for different maps - e.g. in first run of md5 got errors for Gulf of Oman server file then second run it was the Gulf of Oman client file between runs (1st and 2nd run of MD5 checker) i got errors for different map files - whats your suggestion try install on different machine see what happens

try more runs, you can ignore the server files having errors, for you need the client working only. server comes into play when you need to strt a standalone server or something. Besides those can be upgraded even from the server fiile that can be downloaded from EA/BF2

just keep patching...thats how it worked for me.

I'll give this a try but my prob is no matter how times i run it in .exe or command best ive ever got it (multiple clean installs tried) to is 1 invalid file. On my current install if i keep running the patch it gets worse. Picked up 4 errors at the begining and now picks up 7 :|:

So ya i will give this a try.

Mr Helmet, and all those SUPER frustrated people.
I got this "unmodified content" about 10% of the time, so I thought (with Helmet's 100% confidence), I'd try your method out. Initially after a fresh install I had like 50+errors with MD5 (1.00 checksums), all maps and client files failed. I did several complete uninstalls and re-installs with the same result. After planning my BF2 style assault on the nearest EA office, I thought I'd try to install in safe mode. Complete install in safe mode, reboot, and wadyya know - MD5 only found a few errors (DX9 type stuff).

I then did as you said and unzipped the zip file to BF directory and ran the patch from the command window. I then used MD5 (with 1.02 checksums) to check it, and low and behold it all seemed to work (errors once again on the DX9 stuff and the .dll files in bf root directory)
I didn't even use the EA BF 1.02exe patch.

Played for several hours today, no probs. Have I seen the last of my "unmodified content" error??? hope so!! :p

Was it Kellogs or D-Hirogen that seemed to think it was a memory problem?? I'm no computer geek but this didn't seem to make sense?? Wateva works I guess..........

                        Nice One

This method has worked for me, cheers.

ran the patch from command line, completed first time, 3 MD5 errors (Support/readme.txt RendDX9.dll and RendDX9x2.dll). Second time completed no changes so I ran the InstallShield patch once and alls well in MD5 land.

                        Thanks Dark Helmet

Re: How to get 1.02 to install 100% successfully (lame method)

Hey guys. I appreciate you all sharing your information. I'm having a really tough time figuring this one out. I've done the clean install method under safe mode and did a md5 check before patching and I have one invalid file, Objects_client.zip. Previously, when patching, my patchlog indicated that this file was different from the correct version, so it didnt patch it. I'm kinda at a loss and pretty frustrated with EA because it seems that many people are having this problem. I'm not sure if this has anything to do with it, but sometimes when I'm in game, the MEC attack chopper or american bomber will be rainbow colored. Is there a way to change the md5 of my file so that the patcher accepts it? Thanks for any help....

Can somebodys provide me a link to the wiki? Whenever I click on the one at EA it brings me to Godaddy.com.
