What do stingers lock on to?

I'm wondering about the stingers you fire from the ground:

What aircraft do you get the X over? Is it a teammate flying your team's plane? Or a teammate in any team's plane? I think it locks on to teammates if they fly a captured aircraft, cause I've had a few teamkills. So does this mean that it won't lock on to an enemy if he has captured one of my teams aircraft? I don't think so, cause I've never been killed by an aircraft because I wasn't able to get a lock on him. Help me out someone, I'm a bit confused here...

Can that really be all? 'Cause as I said, I've gotten locks on teammates a few times, a been punished severly for the teamkills...
I'm aware that the lock disappears when the pilot ejects.

Stingers/ILGAs only lock on to enemies. That is, you will only get a solid tone on an enemy and usually a cross on a friendly. Missiles launched at an enemy will turn slowly, and are easily fooled by flares or turning. If you launch without lock at an enemy, you will always miss, and if you launch without lock at a friendly, the missile will be super-accurate and you will get team vehicle damage.

BUT if there's any other air vehicle nearby, enemy OR friendly, the missile will make a rapid turn and hit the 2nd target with perfect accuracy. This goes for air-launched missiles as well; I've been dogfighting and seen a missile turn away from a plane in front of me and slam into an enemy blackhawk that was full. Once. The same has happened to me many times to a friendly chopper. Punish, kick, ban. Most of the time if a friendly is within your view when you launch a missile, you will kill it.

When the missile loses lock on a enemy, and a friendly is close by, then it locks onto it... Happened a lot to me, so as I said, don't touch the things anymore...

you can have missels lock on to your teammates if you fire one at an enemy, he dodges it and then it runs across your teammates jet.

and what the other guys said too lol.

Any air vehicle with a square/triangle/circle (shapes related to each nation's HUDs) over it is an enemy vehicle (or a pilot-less vehicle if you notice you don't get a lock-on), while an X is a vehicle with a friendly.

You cannot target a friendly initially, but once the missile is in flight, it will choose whoever is in it's path. All lock-on missiles will target any flying vehicle, whichever vehicle is closest to it.

-If you lock onto an enemy, and the missile goes by him, it will veer off in that general direction unless another is in front of it.
-Unless you lock on to something before you fire it, the missile will be "dumb" and not lock onto anything during its flight course.
-If another vehicle, friend or enemy, is between you and the vehicle you lock onto, the missile will IMMEDIATELY go to the closer vehicle.
-Flares usually just make the missile miss and veer off, but rarely the missile will hit the flare and explode.
-If the pilot of an aircraft leaves his seat, the missile cannot lock onto that vehicle (and will divert if it was locked on), a dastardly tactic also used by common pilots in BFV.

As it is, the Anti-Air emplacements and AA vehicles' missiles are relatively useless, since a plane or chopper has to be going directly away from you without turning for you to have much of a chance at hitting him at all.

With luck, you'll probably take down a friendly before you hit an enemy, since when a missile diverts to a friend, they have little time to evade the missile as the lock alarm sounds when its much closer to them.

The missle can only lock onto an enemy flying a plane or helo. If you fire a missle and get a TK it is probally because a nearby heatsouce sent the missle off course. Flares can send your missle off course and some times hit your team mates plane. Those burning oil refinaries can do this also. You can shoot at the red X's (your teammates) but you will not get a lock on them even if you think you have.

I've had the Laser Guided missles swurve way off target and hit a friendly before too. Got tone, FIRE, pulls to the far right and slams a friendly APC.
