Graphics Turn Black

I had the same problem. (Dell XPS, 3.2Ghz P4, ATI X800XT, 1Gb ram.)
I found the report on ATI's website and their workaround (set texture quality from high to medium) seems to have done the trick.
I would quite frequently (for no known reason) have the game freeze with either a black screen or garbled graphics, for a few seconds straight. Needless to say, I died 95% of the times this happened.
After lowering the settings a bit, everything runs smoother, and online play is much better. Before what I thought was network lag was just the graphics slowing things down.
Also, deleting all the subfolders from the "My Documents\Battlefield 2\mods\bf2\cache\" folder seemed to help get rid of black textures. This is where the "optimizing shaders" function actually caches the data.
Using medium instead of high quality textures also has the side effect of speeding up the time it spends "verifying client data". Used to take >30s, now takes <10.
I'm using the 5.7 catalyst drivers, though not the one with the .Net CCC crap.
(every version prior that I tried with the CCC it had a memory leak, and was generally ill-behaved)
hope that helps some people.
