    commander useless?

Imagine possible situation: Camp gib, Pac captured first flag and just managed cap Toll station, practicly the hole PAC team is situated on or around Toll station flag. Eu guys coming from central camp to get this flag back, great gun fight is about to begin. BUT just when this is going to happen enemy or friendly commander, doesnt matter, sends orbital strike on enemy masses. What happens? tell you. Gun fight is screwed! Everybody has to clear off or die, the great battle shatters into many smaller fights. Fun is screwed thx commander. Do you get my point? Commander spotting enemys ok, commander sending supply box ok, commander emping and orbitaling walker ok! But this orbital infantry thing really screws my experience from game, apart off that terrible sound! I would like to see orbital strike completely removed. there is no skill imho to drop orbital on infantry just pure luck. pls discuss

I doubt they will remove it. Titan mode doesn't have orbital strike tho

Well, for one thing the thread title isn't about what you're really asking then- the tactical use of orbital strike.

In answer to your question, no, hoping to get lucky hitting random infantry is generally not the best use of OS. In the case you describe I might use it to break up/distract a flanking squad, cover a retreating squad that's getting pwnt (while dropping supplies a little further back for them to re-group on) or save it for some solo hero capping another flag. If there's absolutely nothing at all better to do with it, maybe take out a sniper who has been sitting in one place too long. If OS *is* lobbed at an enemy concentration, take advantage of it- it won't be a killer, but should injure a few bad guys and give you some cover to lob grenades or PK's at 'em. If it's decently targeted, you shouldn't have to run willy-nilly- keep your cool and kill some dudes.

All of that assumes that the walker is down, since that's obviously the priority target- The ole' EMP-OS combo's bread and butter- Armor smashing.

Luke.. I get your point, but I dont see it being relevant to skill.

I dont play much conquest but when an orb-strike hits, it is kind of a buzz kill when ur squad has another surrounded and all of the sudden they're squashed.

I generally avoid 50/50 engagements though - by either flanking or bypassing the whole cluster f..., and work my way around. I look at an orbital strike as an opportunity to move, specially when you got 5 guys with you - let the enemy be destracted by it...

I was assuming that there is no perfect ones :). covering my squads retreat with orbital?? cool but it will never happen unless there si my guy on commanders spot. I think generally people set sat track, find spot where most red dots are and then send orbital strike. And Iam saying that this particular "mechanism" spoils lot of fun for other non commander players. I can counter any tactic used against me and my squad but the orbital strike, its like deus ex machina combined with noob tube from bf2 . Again gunfight story...everybody can go there and try wipe enemy squad out hole of them, but they risk their life, but commander? NO he just send orbital spoils fun for everyone fromhis team and gets kills. This seems unfair for me. Look i know they never remove orbital or even commander. But I wanted other peeps opinions...

^^Hmm, just curious, how many people are on the particular servers ur playing on? I guess my point is, if you're on a largely populated server...say 32 to 64, maybe somthing closer to 64, it doesnt seem to make that much of a difference.

In all fairness there is some skill to this. Having played a lot of commander on Camp G, and I have seen this situation many times. First off a commander is truly useless if he isn't using the orbital strike at all because its such a powerful asset for your team. In a situation where I can't use it on the walker there are usually 2 things I do.

1.If there is a big battle going on and my guys are doing their best to turtle their way into a flag point I will just find the highest concentration of enemies and fire away (usually I get anywhere from 2-5 guys with this)

2.(and I think this is what you are talking about) If I see a big fight about to happen, say just between the toll roads and camp, I will orbital strike just in front of my army's position. The point is this will scatter the approaching enemy force, splitting them in two and interrupting their charge. Now my guys can move up the middle fast as soon as the strike breaks and make it into the capture point, as opposed to just having to outright push through, which while sometimes fun, can cost a boatload of tickets.

(in a pinch its also great to have an orbital ready to get that one sneaky bastard capping the flag at your base when no one will reach him in time, but that is the only situation where its acceptable to use an orbital on one guy. I hate when the opposing commander uses his orbital on me alone when I command, even though I am far far removed from the front line.)

orbital strike is only really effective taking out a stationary squad or group of people imo or nukin the walker

Why thank you. Can't argue with my perfect-ness! :p

Oh, come now- I could see you making this argument about BF2's artillery, but the Orbital Strike? You're talking about BF2142 here, right?? It's just not that dangerous to infantry. I often whip out my first aid kit and run through it so when the dust settles I'm somewhere the enemy doesn't expect. It's like a big, noisy smoke grenade! If anything, it ought to do a bit more splash damage. I mean, something sending down 15 frickin' "Rods from God" ought to be able to take out more than one guy in the open, and right now it really can't. I don't play commander for OS kills- I can get a lot more kills with an APC (or Walker) than Orbital Strike. Be glad the commander is doing something, instead of going AFK for a twinkie!

Just my $0.02, since you asked...

I felt a little dirty- I used it on a Hachimoto last night... I could tell he was in a nice TV missile sniping spot, and the Goliath (and the rest of my team) was oblivious...

It *did* seem to do the job purty well...

Yea, I can see how a commander is totally useless.

Consider if the commander drops Orbitals every time it becomes ready (ludicrous, but for the sake of argument, consider anyway)... he's basically getting a "shot off" relatively infrequently. Commanding has it's own rewards, sure, but let's face it... you don't really get the visceral thrill of the kill very often if you're doing the job right. The orbital is his only way of making a direct impact on the battlefield, and if he sees throbbing clot of bad guys it's kind of inane to expect him to NOT drop a load of explosives on their heads.

Dropping into a throbbing clot of bad guys mixed with YOUR guys, yeah, that's bad, but if he can get a clean drop into just the bad guys... it should be done. Maybe he'll "steal" a kill from you that way, but as a non-commanding guy who's going to be running around the map actively shooting your gun every chance you get, you'll have way more opportunities to make those kills than he will anyway, so it's small loss, I'd say.

                        Lol QFT.

The comm was probably just trying to soften enemy lines for you Luke...

As a medic I tend to get most of my revive points from people charging through the OS. OS only lasts 15 seconds people, how would you rather wait it out? On the respawn screen, or the edge of the barrage?

Using the orbital strike takes no skill.

However, using it well takes quite a lot of skill, and lets you really help your team (say when you wipe out a whole enemy squad who make the mistake of bunching up too close).

                            Nuff said.

I think it's presumptuous of you to assume that EVERY single player who plays the game LOVES chaotic 30-on-30 gangbangs; who needs maps with buildings and stuff for that? Just throw 60 guys into an empty field and whoever's got the best aim wins, right? Some of us prefer squad vs. squad encounters over army vs. army encounters.

Seems like whenever I try that, I get directly speared, right on the melon, by one of those Rods from God. :dead:
