This thread brings back memories of when I had 14 kills with the walker AA seat, I needed 1 more kill for my award but NOOOOOOOOOOOO the pilot/driver/whatever you want to call them wouldnt stop moving, causing our walker to hit some Motion and EMP mines, causing us to go BOOM, and ending the round.

I find you can generally afford to pause for a moment when you pop shields. If the gunship is close enough/fast enough that he passes you while your shield are still up, you can give the AA guy a little more steady time. If the gunship is rolling in a little slower (ironically making an easier target) or is further away, you have to move sooner so he doesn't pop you once your shields run out.
I also tend to be more accomodating if the AA gunner seems to know what he's doing- If he seems to be firing willy-nilly and kicking up dirt, than I tune him out. But it he seems to be focusing on the air and our backside, and spotting things, then I know that when he fires it's for a good reason & I'll stop for a moment if it seems safe to do so. If, in addition, he actually seems to be able to *hit* things, I'll help him as much as I can, maneuvering to give him a better line of sight, or whatever.
But if I'm pubbing, things generally go much better if I can switch seats myself as needed. I'll work with a guy, though, as long as he doesn'r steal the thing when I hop out to repair.Comment

at least the active defense affords the walker a few seconds of invulnerability to gunship attacks (besides being rammed by it) so stand still, pop the shield and if your gunner is competent enough, that gunship won't get a second chance to strafe you again. They would either be dead or limping back to the pad for repairs.Comment

on conquest walkers are usually jittery, they have to worry about the emp/orb strike combo totally mowing them, an assortment of long range armour and other walkers mowing them and engineers, its reasonable to want skilled drivers and gunners because they will benefit your teamComment

i think i heard something about.....no wait.....yeah i'm pretty sure i heard about this thing they have in 2142 called a counter measure in the form of a shield to help you aginst enemy fire.....yeah, you could be still and try that thing out. just a rational suggestion.....You know what else is easy to hit? A walker that isn't moving! If theres a gunship coming in on me and I'm the pilot walker, standing still isn't going to save anyone in the walker. HOWEVER moving and trying to avoid the gunship might actually help. My advice, practice at shooting your targets while on the move.

The problems seem to come to coordination. Or, the lack of it actually. I've found that most walker pilots want to go their way and do their thing, while the co-pilots have their own completely different agenda on their minds. All vehicles suffer from this, but it's worse with the walker because it's second seat is unique in that it's a very effective, mobile, AA station. I know, in maps like Camp G and Tunis Harbor it's not as much of an issue since there's no air offence. But otherwise, if the two drivers just took a few seconds to get on the same page they could be very effective together. Even if the drivers are only OK in their walker skills, they'd still make a difference if they're working together and working smart.
Besides, I can tell you from experience that having your walker in the hands of a so-so friendly driver is 100 times better than having it in the hands of a very skilled enemy. Sometimes a CP/silo is about to come under attack, and any armor there has to be boarded NOW. Which would you rather board the armor?
Oh wait. Scratch everything I just said. Who has time to plan out the use of a walker? After all, we just want to get in it and blow stuff up, right? :pComment

I wasn't saying that anyone below a major is not worthy of a walker outright, I am just pointing out that from my experience on camp g (which I have played for like 130 hours out of my 140 total) if I see a field marshall or brig gen running to get the walker I am glad because I know its going to last, but as soon as I see some sgt or private I know we are screwed because these guys are so excited to get the walker they have no idea how to pilot it, let alone what spots to avoid on the map (I will admit there are rare instances where someone is on their second soldier and is actually quite experienced, but my soldier isn't named Kreskin the Amazing, so I can't tell that if all I can see is your rank). It frustrates me a lot when someone gets the walker and runs it right into a MM death zone, but it is infinitely more irritating when they are so inexperienced that they can't even walk in a straight line to get out of an orbital strike (without the preceeding EMP blast). I know it takes some trial and error to figure out where to take the walker to survive, but if you are just starting with it at least be the stupid gunner and watch what a smart driver does instead of being the stupid driver and then watching the walker tumble over in flames while the rest of your teammates shoot you in the head even though FF is off.
And for anyone here who thinks I am talking out my *** here is my profile to prove that
A)I have been a low rank and worked my way up to brig gen legit
B)I have played an absolute assload of camp G
C)while I am not a total armor whore, I think an over 4 k/d ratio with the walker shows I am not the guy who gets it killed immediately

You are absolutley right. I am amazed at the people who after being frozen for a few seconds or more will get out of the walker. I will always go down with the walker and take the death rather than jump out to try and save my skin, only to have the other team get in and have an engi repair and use it against me.Comment

A) / B) are all very nice, but your skill doesn't really have much relevance to your arguments.

And C) shows that even though being a brig general, there are still things you don't know.. K/D ratio are deaths by walker, not in walker, so it is not a measure of skill.
Now I agree that you should be able to "pass the driving test" in any vehicle before you use it in multiplayer, but after that it is time to get some combat experience.
If they are as bad as you think, then there will soon be a new walker for you to grab. And with your superior skill it should last you the rest of the round.Comment

I'm not trying to sound elitist, I am just saying that camp G is such a great map, it's one of my favorites in any game ever. When things are evenly matched and there is a pitched battle of 64 people with both walkers at the toll stations its one of the most awesome experiences ever. However the flip side to that coin is that without proper walker support your team is pretty much doomed unless you have some sort of ninja recon squad that manages to sneak all the way to EU base and cap it before anyone notices. I am all for people experiencing all the facets of BF2142, but if you want to get some time behind the walker, do it in single player, or even some of the titan maps where there are anywhere from 2-8 walkers strewn about and they respawn any minute. Just dont do it on a map where there is only 1 walker, its use is a huge factor in your victory, and the thing doesn't re-spawn for like 5-6 minutes after it goes down. It's a **** move to everyone else on your team.Comment

Like landodger said, the EMP/orbital strike combo really tears up a walker. When im in the EU walker on tunis ill usually go long enough to really start getting on the outher teams nerves. Its at that point that you CANNOT stop at all. Otherwise you'll get shreaded by the commander. Stoping might be good for the opening stages but after that you really need to keep on the move.Comment

I don't believe that. Not one Walker making that much of a difference.
Since you brought up stats I would like to mention that you have less than 30 kills with the primary Engineer AV weapon.
I dont have your rank or Camp Gib experience, but I do have 10 times your kills with the AV weapons, and a lot of those are Walkers.
Actually I have destroyed 50% more walkers than you have.
So I will claim that no single walker can dominate a map, if somebody spawns as Engineer.
And if you are the one being dominated by the Walker, then you are someone.Comment

not true Vreki i dominated many maps in a walker, while there was many engis from the other team :pI don't believe that. Not one Walker making that much of a difference.

Vreki I don't see why you feel the need to call me out again and again. I am just trying to get across the point that Camp G can suck without your walker, and 9/10 you lose the walker on that map because of some noob. It's pretty simple. I am not trying to argue with you (although in all fairness I would say 1% of the people I see on Camp G servers are engie, the walker usually gets taken out by some sneaky recon with RDX, hence the mentality of not staying still, hence the gunner not being able to hit anything, hence the original point of this entire thread...how's that for bringing it back on topic? :yay:)Comment

"Many"? Two salvos from 4 Engineers would erase your walker, so I would like to know how many Engineers your are talking about. And how you count them btw., I don't recall seeing an active engineers counter anywhere?
Having a High K/D ratio in the walker is not dominating the map.
Making the other side completely unable to hold flags is dominating the map.
Several of the Gamp Gib flags are inaccessible to a walker, how do you dominate those?
( I just noticed that Camp Gib is in fact one of the few maps where you have a W/L below 1. And just 15 rounds) So that particular map seems hard to domitae.)
You have a nice W/L ratio, but if the Walker was then end-all to winning the map then it should be much higher.
I mean, you do claim to be a top Walker pilot right? And you have managed to be in the Walker more than half of your total gaming time, right?
So what?
