as i said before, a walker of any size has no viable military application. vs our modern military of today. an at-at would go down pretty much instantly. large targets are easy targets. the rebels in star wars are retarded, one bomb should be able to take that thing out, no reason to do the rope-a-dope

That just further shows the silliness of a walker. All the enemy would have to do is tie some tight ropes and you walker batallion would be **** out of luck :P

yeap, i still say the armored power suit would have a viable place in the military though

It is clearly stated in the scene that the walkers are too heavily armoured for their blasters.
In the context of the film, there is nothing stupid about it.

Like our "own" walker, they only survive due to heavy armour and massive firepower.

Just to point a couple things out...

A bipedal walker would never work. Bipedal movement is a horrible thing; it's terribly unbalanced. (See Spatial Geometry: 3 points make a plane). A good design would be based on a multiple of 3 "legs" with a shifting center of balance to adjust for the loss of leg(s). Think something along the lines of an insect with 6 legs.

Yes, something that tall would be more visible, but also have to take into account advances in the armoring of said vehicle. With a wide enough stance, it wouldn't be able to be knocked over.

yes... a bipedal machine will not be possible in the near or moderate future. The closest thing we have to bipedal walkers now are robots like ASIMO. ever see how they move? they lift up the left leg, tilt the right leg to make it the center of gravity, sort of "fall" forwards, and their left leg comes down to stop the fall. horribly, horribly slow and unbalanced.
a bipedal walker is balancing all its weight on one foot most of the time. like Yraen said the most stable would be a 6-legged walker, but the machinery required for that would be horrendously complex.
so... no walkers for the moment ):

You know, this thing is real, and it operates in difficult terrain.

So it is certainly not technically impossible, there just doesn't appear to be a need outside a very small niche.

Walkers would actually be quite invaluable considering that tanks and the like have pretty severe limitations regarding the terrain on which they can travel. (They aren't the ownage machines that BF makes them out to be.) While bipedal humanoid walkers wouldn't be practical, multipedal walkers would definitely be well loved for their ability to place heavy armor in areas that tanks can't reach (Which accounts for 50+% of all the world's terrain- not exactly a "very small niche"). Of course, the technology to make them suitably fast and agile for such purposes is still far from sufficent today.
