Ubisoft Montreal now has a tracked record of learning from their mistake.
The first Assassin's Creed is pretty boring and repetitive game, and so was Far Cry 2.
What they were doing is to find a way to design sandbox type games.
However, they were caught in the realism trend and forgot that the game is about fun, not about doing jobs like in real life. AC2 is huge fun, and subsequent franchise don't repeat the same mistake.
And now we have Far Cry 3 just annouced in E3. The trailer looks like any other modern shooter, but the bad guy in the trailer is talking about the definition of insanity (quote Einstein) repetetively. This is a good sign that Ubisoft Montreal have taken a note of critics from FC2.
Not speculating what would be in FC3, but the only thing that is missing in FC2 single player is fun. Most missions are not different from any other mission, and most players stick to their preferred style. The game is supposed to be played by varying styles of play each time, but it turns out that a sniper rifle with Carl Gustav and SMG as side arms prevails every single time. Some of the assassination missions are too easy if you are good with Type 63 mortar. Over all, the game is superior in every technical way, except it isn't fun.
And the level design and overall turd-looking environment doesn't help, not to mention the mandatory malaria infection and depressing storyline.
The concept of respawning enemy and road rage actually isn't that bad, had they tune the respawn frequency and incident rate a bit lower.
And the multiplayer doesn't play very much different from COD. It wasn't very bad, just no reason to play.
But there are good things about FC2 that they should carry on to FC3. The map editor is fantastic. The Dunia engine and the game mechanism indeed allow full freedom of the player. The very large and diverse environment, from desert to open grass land to jungle to wetland is genius. People who complained that the map is 'too mall' probably didn't do diamond hunting very well.
The first thing they need to do with FC3 is throw away all the realism crap they've done in FC2. Far Cry should be a serious of B-movie-esque action game featuring sci-fi story and sandbox type gaming. In short, they need to develop action-centric FPS that plays somewhat like GTA4 or AC2, not Sadre-ist type nonsensical display of existentialism.
