It makes plenty of sense if it in any way patches the executable, since the steam version is different from the retail version.

I don't see what all the fuss is about, you got your answer and a refund, now go buy the version that is guaranteed to work with your version.

Its the same with Fallout3. The Addons on steam are not compatable with the retail version. It gets like that probably because its too hard to integrate non-steam games/versions correctly.

i mean, why should the steam version be different? i think they are losing money.. i mean, in some way they force the people with the steam version to keep using it with the expansions but in the same time they do not allow the others to buy dlc from steam if they do not have the previous steam version already

I don't quite understand your question. Steam have no say it this matter, they are just the distributor. And EA gets paid regardless of where you purchase it.
