I use optics with all of my vehicles. I've always been a long range guy, but not a sniper.
Use the zoom to hover far away and you can easily kill enemies and vehicles with great precision, and by far away I mean across the map. They won't even know what hit them. You can also just circle above as high as possible and have the gunner aiming towards the center to create an AC130 type support platform for the guys on the ground.
You can out-range the AA vehicles and emplacements with the zoom, and you're too far away to get a tracer lock unless you're sitting their like an idiot.
When it comes to the pilot, I like damage, so the rockets really wreak havoc.
For tanks I like optics, I use range for protection and it works great. For APCs I think damage is more important than optics so use extra damage, optics are nice but it depends on the situation.
For ATV jihading you want extra armor.
For HMMWV usage use the extra armor.
For boats use extra armor, or damage if you're using the gunboat.
voptics is the way to go on all kits. you can do serious damage with almost no possibility of retaliation.
although tracer/hellfire is a good combo on choppers i guess. everything else, voptics rule.

Great minds think alike
The tracer/hellfire is a good combo but it's not worth it. Why get close enough to effectively plant a tracer and take more time to lock the hellfire when the gunner can fire off 3-4 bursts from across the map? You never see real Apaches flying very low and go past their targets in real life, this is because they're far too easy to engage. The Apache was designed to sit back and fire off from a distance. You should never expose yourself to the enemy fire that comes after a passover.
To properly use the Apache I think you need a gunner with optics and the pilot with extra damage. Whenever there's a group target the gunner can spot them and the pilot can fire off a salvo from far away. It might not be as effective as coming up close and getting each shot on target, but it's a lot scarier seeing the rockets streak towards you and tear apart all the buildings. You will get splash damage but it won't be extremely effective, that's why the gunner has optics.
Has anybody ever hovered with an Apache and spammed the main gun? It's a fight stopper.

I just tried optics in helo
does NOTHING as pilot? :shakehead:
does work as gunner - but cannot see across the map
(in Atacama Desert - cannot even see flag B from Main Base)
does work as tank driver - again - only a modest increase in range
voptics is good but I like to be more proactive in the vehicles
in the UAV I am always flying in close to the action mowing enemies with the alt fire and getting my team mates closer
same with a tank, I might sometimes range an MCOM but I can do that without the zoom, then I can go in and plow through endless noobs with the coaxial
the Heli alt fire isn't always useful which is why I have learned to blindfire the hellfire, that thing is powerful as hell, can even spam it from range pretty nicely lol
