I don't find this issue very surprising as I see it happen all the time in BF series. Remember knife dust in BF2...ANNOYING!

EDIT: Forgot to say, they are automatic you do not have a choice or can guess whether your guy will stab or slash.

For example, let's say there's a chicken wire fence or a wooden stockade, when you want to break them, your knife is in slash mode. You swipe downwards or sideways. Entire arm slash down.

But let's say you are coming up behind a crouched sniper, your knife automatically goes into the stabbing motion, the elbow lunging forward.

So let's say in this situation:

When I turn around the corner sprinting, and another fellow is turning the same corner face to face sprinting as well. I react faster than he does and hit the knife button, most of the time, I will slash because on the monitor, he actually ran past me because both of us were running in the opposite direction after we passed each other. However, his shadow or aka hitreg is lagging behind him, so I actually hit him.

OR if someone is behind a fence while you are slashing it, you get the kill.

I guess the generalization is, when there's no clear target IN FRONT OF YOUR GUI, it is in slash mode. If there is an enemy infantry, it is in stab mode.

I hope you understand my explaination.

These are purely empirical, based on my experience. If anyone got a better answer, please tell Dragon.

As far as I know there is only one way to use the knife.

Exactly. Also, I stopped playing BF2 not long after I got 5,000 knife kills so it can't be bad skills that I prefer BFBC2's knife.
