ATI 5850 here, loved it in beta when I could only get dx10, and didn't notice any performance drop, when I got 11 in retail. Didn't do any actual benching, but it just looks better and still getting what never seems like less then 30, and might be closer 60 most of the time, cause it's smoooottthhhhhhhh, even when the going gets SERIOUS.

What's your PC setup like? i run an E8400 and 2 GB or ram and I'm trying to decide between a 5850 or a gts 250.
Q9300, 4GB corsair 800Mhz, Ocz vertex 60GB. Running it at 2048 x 1152 maxed. I think a little AA and AF, but really with this resolution it's not that noticeable even when you leave it off.
I wouldn't consider a GTS 250, it's a very old GPU, G92 core has been in like 5 serperate videocards, if you insist on Nvidia then get a GTX 260 or 275. If you want DX11 wait about a month or so and hopefully the Ferimir GTX 470 and 480 will be out, their actual performance still remains largely unknown. Otherwise a ATI 5770 if money is tigher, but yeah 5850s seem to be punching through this game maxed.
You might want to consider bumping up your memory though 2GB with vista or windows 7 is pretty tight. The Cpu should hold you over for now, even if it bottlenecks the card a little, which I'm not even sure it does, I remember a fairly decent dual core optimization patch in Beta.
