yea commander is not that necessary imo. you see health and ammo packs everywhere and all the snipers have a personal artillery so the only thing gone are the stupid spot spamming.

Artillery -> Every recon has his personal arty strike now
UAV -> everyone can spot and people get a shoot here magnate attached to their heads

I would love the commander to have been included, but it is a dumbed down, console version of BF so of course there is no commander.

Commander would be good to have in BC2. Just a non-spawn position that only a person with X amount of hours/rank could play. Controls the UAV, attack/defend orders, resupply and not much else. Gets are certain amount of points for the win like BF2.

Who misses doing a great job at commander only to get a mutiny 2 secs before the round ends? Do you miss fighting commanders? The commander flying around in the chopper or gunship was always so awesome. What about the idiot squad leader who is always calling for supplies, UAV's and artillery no matter how many times you give it to them?

Are you sure you still want commander?
I still do, cause I can turn all those around.

In a way when you have a good commander it makes the game feel more important in someway rather it be him spotting or sending you supplies but overall it's almost like having God giving directions and watching out for you. :P

Exactly! Or even give orders to a squad to move to an area of value so they all see the location to watch out for.

Spamming where people are when they are not affecting any outcome is a waste.

                Re: I miss commander

I have very mixed feelings about the commander. From my current position, if a commander will be included in BF3, he should have something which defines his role. In Battlefield 2, a commander only worked as intended in the first few months of the Demo, where people didnt really know what to do, and the immersion factor was amazing. As time progressed, and peoples understanding of the map changed, so did commanders role. People knew which flags were important, which positions to hold, and which spots were the most profitable score wise. 5 squads working on their own know a lot more of the battlefield, than the commander does. So step by step, commanders role degraded from "commanding" to "intelligence officer". A good commander today, is the one who uses supply crates for choppers and armor, spots like a maniac, and has the UAV constantly up on the most of the time, while reserving the artillery for positions unreachable by any squad in the critical timeframes.

I wouldnt mind a players position with many of these elements in mind, but BF2 mods and BC2 have already covered most of these aspects. Point of Existence 2 created a very effective skill based artillery system with innovative aiming mechanism (even had a couple of guides up, with Heavy552). BC2 has the UAV. People can spot themselves and the skill-based UAV can be in the right places at any time. Supply crates are largely unnecessary as they make helos and tanks into lonewolves (however, invaluable in BF2, where Mobile STA *had* to lonewolf it).

Id like a separate position, but it has to redefine itsself.

As I play a lot on the TG servers, I definitely miss the commander. And for that matter, REAL connected squad play.

This is the one area that BC2 really pales in comparison to BF2/2142.

                    I mostly agree with this.

I've always had mixed feelings about the 2142 commander. Sometimes it can be extremely useful, but I'm not too upset to see it gone. That said, I played on some well organized servers occasional (I can't remember the server name, but they kicked you if you didn't join a squad in the first 30 seconds). You'd often get squad leaders that occasionally gave orders and commanders who knew how to organize the team. It can be very helpful, be cause a commander can keep squads from getting bunched up in one area while another area isn't covered well enough, and other basic things like that.

I really enjoyed playing as commander when I could get squads to at least sometimes follow orders, but more often than not, like Chris said, the position was mostly reduce to supply drops, spotting, and orbitals. Frustrating.... *sigh*

Rafter and Jake, maybe youre both talking about the TacticalGamers servers? I think TG had a 90 second kick timer in POE2 servers for squad joining. A tonload of competent and experienced squadleaders and commanders. Although from my TG-POE2 days, I dont remember commanders really giving orders frequently, most squadleaders knew which point to hold and which to attack. TG SQL-s were usually very coordinated so I wouldnt be surprised if the commanding took place over TeamSpeak/Ventrilo, though.

you cant do that in 2142, never understood why they didnt fixed it in bf2, or they did?

Yes! Thanks. I couldn't remember the name to save my life. They were a bit pushy with the rules, I think I only had issues with admin abuse once or twice maybe, but gameplay was always great on their servers.

You're right though, most often it was just the squad leaders being very efficient and knowledgeable and people following their orders. (Oh man, I loved being a squad leader and actually having people work with me). Occasionally you would get a commander who worked really well as a link between SLs, but I suppose you are probably right about the TeamSpeak/Ventrilo stuff.

I can't speak for POE2 as I didn't play it much but in organized game play in BF2 the commander is the most important person. Unfortunately in PUB servers you normally have squad leaders who don't have a clue and commanders who don't have a clue. Fortunately for POE2 most of these people don't play with mods especially mods as nicely made as POE2; all around and tactical wise. Anyone that has a problem with a commander that is doing his job and not playing is retarded.
                            ---------

There are a few players that can command and play but most players can't even command. The map being played makes a difference. Playing and commanding on kubra dam is practically impossible. Playing and commanding is something only a small percent of people can do and no offense to the good commanders that can't do it. Not everyone is equal when it comes to staying alive and having extremely high KDR.

As some have said it's annoying when people ask for supplies over and over. It's more annoying to have a commander that cancels the supplies as soon as someone asks for it just because it isn't ready. This only makes them ask over and over hoping that when the supplies do become available they simply accept the request so the supplies or whatever else goes where they asked and not some random place the commander places them. If a tank asks for supplies he more than likely wants them where he asked for them. Not on top of his tank, on top of a tree, where he can't get to them, closer to the opponent than himself..list goes on.

As far as BC2 goes not having the commander is best. It simply isn't needed in this game as many have explained.

How do you juggle between commanding and playing efficiently? I find it difficult to spot/supply/UAV/Arty and do anything else at the same time.

                                Re: I miss commander

Overall, I am glad it's gone. I wouldn't mind it coming back in BF 3, but as a different role. The biggest problems with the role in BF are...

                                1. Little chance to go to a base and not be spotted. This game, you have a better chance of actually using "stealth" to some degree. This is made worse when all you have to do is right click on the map at any time to spot enemies.
                                2. A good commander can easily win a game and a bad commander can easily lose it for the team. If kick voting was a bit more useful, then this wouldn't be such a problem. But as time went on, fewer people wanted to be a commander.
                                3. "Enemy Spotted". How annoying is it for commander to spot and always hear it. Granted, the whole game was way too chatty with the prerecorded messages. This is one thing that has improved in BC 2.

I like the addition of the UAV station as anyone can use it and there is a risk to using it as well as an advantage. If and when the commander role comes back, I just hope it's improved.
