[FAIL] Game won't have mods or public dedicated server

I bought the PC GAMER magazine yesrerday and this was in it:

DICE will not be making the dedicated server files for Battlefield Bad Company 2 available to players. Citing "security and integrity of our game and dedicated servers", they'll lease the use of dedicated servers to the players. Locking down the server files means no multiplayer mods.

DICE previously took advantage of Modern Warfare 2's lack of dedicated servers, saying:
"Battlefield will stay true to its roots offering dedicated servers to all its players and continue the tradition of the ultimate FPS experience."

Yeah, DICE announced that a few months back actually. I think we have a few posts around here somewhere on it. They are also working close with PBBans to help setup some type of global ban system and such.

Old news and any Dedicated servers, even if they are restricted, are still a lot better then IW Net.

DICE promised dedicated server, we have dedicated servers.
Public, unranked, mod-able servers? Maybe not, but your quotes doesn't say anything about that being promised.

The only thing that has failed IMO is this thread.

Why? People who support dedicated servers usually support the complete package that comes with it. DICE is just spinning PR BS. We all know that they wont release DS as an anti-piracy measure. Dedicated Servers offer better hit detection, less lag and smaller pings, but thats *by far* not the only thing which make them important.

I don't see "Dedicated Servers" implying mod support. Or for that matter mod support requiring dedicated servers.
Those two things need not be tied together in games, and I don't recall DICE promising mod support for BC2?

Who are you kidding. In order for multiplayer mods to work, you need dedicated servers.

Or for that matter mod support requiring dedicated servers.

Early interviews went from "were considering it/ were working on it/ its a definite possibility once we make the SDK more accessible" to "no mods".

I dont care much if there was no modding support for BC2, but at the same time Im not dismissing those who did care. Im not a fanboy.

Why? Why cant a mod run on a P2P model?
And even if you needed dedicated servers to run a mod, the availability of servers does not implicitly mean that mods are also supported.

I think mods are great, but they are not the reason I want dedicated servers. IWNet has shown us why we need dedicated servers, regardless of mods

I even recall an interview where they said they will not provide mod support due to how new the frostbite engine is.

If they added mod search as an option to the P2P networking, or had a "server browser" where every host was listed, and you could have option to host a.... bla bla bla. See where this is going?

No, it doesnt, except when you advertise your dedicated servers as the second coming of Christ, suckerpunching the competitor, and deliver a product which only covers one aspect of DS, keeping the typical PR machine going by keeping a glimmer of hope up for people who thought (I wasnt one of them) that DICE would "make it right".

I think mods are great, but they are not the reason I want dedicated servers. IWNet has shown us why we need dedicated servers, regardless of mods
Well, I think mods are an integral part of a well crafted PC multiplayer game. Are you going to dismiss me now, too? More options is better than no options. Youre acting like the MW2 "console guy" who claims that modding is cheating and everyone should play the game the way the developer designed it.

They cant release dedicated server files because its their measure against piracy, also keeping them in complete control over the content. I dont have a problem with the first, I do have a problem with the second part.

And Corvic, DICE kept a position of "we´ll see what happens, its definitely a possibility" for a very long time. Just like IW did.

A little more critical thinking, gentlemen. Even if it would be shown in support for those who do miss this important feature.

No, I like mods and understand why some people are unhappy about the lack of support.
But I think you should worry even more about what this means for BF3, especially if they use Frostbite and security as excuses for not having mod support.

Thats actually exactly what Im worrying about. Modern videogame industry seems to be hellbent on setting new precedents.

"Lets see if the community will be OK with a few less options being included."
                            *massive community praise*
"Nice. It looks like modding isnt as important as they claim afterall."

Especially after you have a look at game-monitor.com and see that the collective mod playerbase cant even breach 1000 player mark.

                              Chris,

I understand what is happening with the video game industry. Mods are being shunned because developers found out they can release DLC and continue to make money off the game. Mods would make DLC less popular. I hate it as much as the next guy.

One can only hope modding tools will be available with BF3, otherwise, what can we do?
